Chapter 4 - The Grand Azure

The Grand Azure Hotel in downtown Portland was the epitome of cold, gleaming wealth. Polished marble floors reflected crystal chandeliers that hung from vaulted ceilings, and the air smelled faintly of expensive orchids and old money.

I smoothed down my modest navy blue blazer—the nicest jacket I owned—and stepped out of the private elevator onto the penthouse floor.

A security guard in a dark suit stood outside double mahogany doors. He checked my name against a digital tablet before nodding and pushing one of the heavy doors open for me.

The penthouse suite was breathtaking. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the rainy Portland skyline, while modern art pieces hung against minimalist white walls. At the center of the room stood Ethan. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his shirtsleeves rolled up slightly at the wrists, staring out at the grey horizon with a cup of black coffee in his hand.

He turned as the door clicked shut behind me.

"You came," he said quietly.

"I didn't have much of a choice, Ethan," I replied, keeping my distance, standing near the entryway like a soldier behind enemy lines. "You threatened me with a legal buzzsaw."

Ethan set his cup down on a glass side table and walked slowly toward me. He looked older than the man I had left six years ago—sharper, more authoritative, the lines around his eyes carrying the weight of a multi-billion-dollar empire. But the intensity in his gaze remained entirely unchanged.

"I didn't threaten you, Emily. I stated facts," Ethan said, his voice measured. "I want my son. And I want a relationship with him. But I also know that dragging a five-year-old child through a bitter custody battle will traumatize him. That is the last thing I want."

"Then drop the lawsuit," I fired back, crossing my arms defensively. "Let us go back to how things were. We can live our lives, you can live yours—"

"No," Ethan interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, carrying an absolute finality that made my breath hitch. "That ship sailed the moment Theo looked at me in that diner and asked why our eyes matched. I am not walking away from my son, Emily. And I am not walking away from you."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "What did you just say?"

Ethan closed the remaining distance between us, stopping just inches away. I could feel the heat of his body, the magnetic pull that had drawn me to him a decade ago in a campus coffee shop before his family's wealth and expectations tore our world apart.

"You think I spent six years searching for a ghost just to hand over visitation rights and play weekend dad?" Ethan asked softly, his gaze dropping briefly to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes. "I never stopped loving you, Emily. Every day since you vanished, I’ve wondered where you were, if you were safe, if you hated me."

"I didn't hate you," I whispered, the confession slipping past my lips before I could stop it. "I just... I couldn't survive in your world, Ethan. Your mother made sure I knew I was nothing. A parasite draining your potential. When I found out I was pregnant, I knew her lawyers would tear me to pieces. They would have taken my baby before he drew his first breath."

Ethan reached out, his fingertips gently brushing against my cheek, tracing my jawline with a tenderness that completely disarmed me.

"My mother is gone, Emily," he murmured, his thumb brushing my lower lip. "You don't have to run from ghosts anymore. Everything I have—my empire, my resources, my life—belongs to you and Theo now. All you have to do is let me in."

Before I could process the staggering weight of his words, the heavy mahogany door of the penthouse suite swung open behind us.

A sharp, haughty voice echoed across the expansive room, shattering the fragile intimacy of the moment.

"Ethan, darling, the board meeting is in twenty minutes, and—"

A stunning woman in a sharp Chanel suit and designer heels stepped into the suite, stopping dead in her tracks as she saw the two of us standing inches apart. Her meticulously styled blonde hair and razor-sharp cheekbones were instantly recognizable from society magazines across the country.

Victoria Vance. Ethan’s rumored fiancée and corporate heir apparent.

And her eyes—fixed entirely on me—were pure venom.
