Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

The master suite of the Carver mansion was a place Hannah had only ever entered to clean, always careful not to touch the expensive mahogany furniture or the silk sheets. Now, she sat on the edge of the plush velvet sofa, Daniel’s oversized jacket still draped over her shoulders.
Ben sat close to her, his small hand resting on her knee. "Is the baby okay, Hannah?" he asked softly.
"The baby is fine, Ben," Hannah said, offering him a genuine, reassuring smile. She gently stroked his hair. "You were very brave, but you shouldn’t have run into the ballroom like that. It was dangerous."
"I had to protect you," Ben said stoutly. "Uncle Daniel says we protect the people we care about."
Daniel entered the room, carrying a tray with warm tea and a first-aid kit. He waved his hand slightly at Ben. "Go back to your room, Ben. Mrs. Gable is waiting for you. I need to speak with Hannah."
Ben looked at Hannah, who nodded gently, before he stood up and hugged her tightly. "Goodnight, Hannah. Goodnight, baby," he whispered to her belly before running out of the room.
The heavy oak door clicked shut, leaving Hannah alone with the most powerful man in the city. The silence between them was thick, heavy with unsaid words and a history that spanned five years—years where Hannah had worked silently in the background, nursing a secret love for her employer that she never dared to voice.
Daniel sat on the coffee table opposite her. He opened the first-aid kit, took out a wet, warm cloth, and gently reached out to wipe a trace of dried blood near her temple where Claire’s scissors had nicked her skin. Hannah flinched slightly at the touch, not out of fear of him, but from the sheer intimacy of it.
"I am sorry I wasn't here sooner," Daniel said, his voice thick with a rare emotion. "I should have never left you alone in this house with her."
"You didn't know, Mr. Carver," Hannah whispered. "She... she was angry because she found out."
Daniel froze, his hand stopping mid-air. "Found out what?"
Hannah looked down at her lap, her hands trembling as they rested on her stomach. "She found out that... that the child I am carrying isn't from some random stranger. She found the medical records from the fertility clinic. She knows I was a surrogate."
Daniel’s breath hitched. The truth, heavy and long-hidden, finally hung between them.
Seven months ago, when Daniel’s late brother’s estate was tied up in a legal battle and Daniel was desperate to secure a blood heir to fulfill a trust clause that would keep the company out of his corrupt uncle's hands, a secret agreement had been made. Hannah, desperately needing money to pay for her terminal mother’s medical bills, had volunteered to be the surrogate using Daniel’s biological material.
It was supposed to be strictly professional. A contract signed in the dark. But during those quiet nights in the mansion, as they crossed paths in the hallways, a quiet, unspoken bond had formed.
"Claire knew?" Daniel asked, his voice dangerously low.
"She threatened to expose the contract to the press," Hannah said, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes. "She said she would paint me as a gold-digging whore who seduced her fiancé, and make sure your child was declared illegitimate. She wanted me to sign a paper giving up all rights and leaving the country tonight. When I refused... she cut my hair. She wanted to break me."
May you like
Daniel stood up, his tall frame radiating a terrifying aura of vengeance. He walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the glittering lights of the city.
"She will not break you, Hannah. And she will never touch our child," he said, the word our sending a tremor of hope through Hannah’s chest. He turned back to her, his eyes blazing with resolve. "The Whitlocks think they can use the media to destroy us. Tomorrow, we change the narrative."
