Chapter 3: The Price of Treason

The public backlash was immediate and fierce. On social media, the story of the "Mechanic Billionaire and the Evil In-Laws" became an overnight viral sensation. Millions of people debated the case, but the tide completely turned when Lucas’s PR team released the official hospital medical logs and video recordings of my father signing the trust agreement. In the video, my father was smiling, clear-headed, and explicitly stated: “I am doing this to protect my daughter Elena from the greed of my wife and eldest daughter, who have ruined my life’s work.”

The public sympathy for my mother and Vanessa evaporated within an hour. But the real nightmare for them was just beginning.

Two weeks after the eviction, they were forced to move into a cramped, two-bedroom rental property in a lower-class district—the very kind of neighborhood Vanessa had spent her entire life mocking. Their bank accounts were frozen pending the forensic audit, and their fancy lawyer dropped them the moment Lucas’s legal team threatened him with a disbarment lawsuit for filing frivolous claims.

I stood beside Lucas in the glass-walled boardroom of the Aurelius Group headquarters when the forensic accountants delivered the final report.

"Mr. Aurelius, Mrs. Aurelius," the lead auditor said, sliding a thick digital folder across the mahogany table. "It’s much worse than we anticipated. Over the last four years, Victoria Vance (my mother) and Vanessa Vance have embezzled a total of $4.2 million from the employee pension fund of Vance Logistics."

I gasped, covering my mouth. "The pension fund? That money belonged to the drivers, the warehouse workers, the mechanics! People who worked for my dad for thirty years!"

"Exactly," the auditor nodded. "They used a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands to disguise the transfers as 'consulting fees.' But Vanessa was sloppy. She used the shell company’s credit card to purchase a custom diamond necklace from a boutique in Paris last summer. The paper trail is ironclad."

Lucas looked at me, his eyes searching my face. "Elena, this is criminal grand larceny. If we hand this over to the District Attorney, your mother and sister are looking at a minimum of fifteen years in a federal penitentiary. I will do whatever you want. If you want to spare them the jail time for the sake of your family name, I can destroy them financially instead."

I looked out the window, looking at the city below. I remembered the freezing rain. I remembered the blood in my mouth. I remembered how my mother laughed while my father's memory was trampled in the mud, and how Vanessa dropped our wedding photo into the dirt like trash.

But most of all, I thought about the families of the warehouse workers whose pensions had been stolen.

"My father loved his employees, Lucas," I said, my voice hardening into pure steel. "He treated them like family. If he were alive, he would never let someone steal their future. Hand the files to the police. They chose their actions; now they can face the consequences."

That evening, the drama reached its absolute peak.

Vanessa, tipped off by a rogue clerk that arrest warrants were being drafted, completely lost her mind. She drove her leased sports car directly to the gates of our penthouse building, screaming my name past the security barrier.

"Elena! You ungrateful bitch!" she screamed, her designer clothes rumpled, her face pale with desperation as the security guards restrained her. "You’re going to put your own mother in jail? You're going to ruin my life over some stupid money? We share the same blood!"

I walked down to the lobby, accompanied by Lucas and four security officers. Through the reinforced glass doors, I looked at my sister. The arrogance that had defined her entire existence was completely shattered. She looked small, ugly, and desperate.

"We stopped sharing blood the night you pushed me into the rain, Vanessa," I said through the external intercom system. "You told me that every choice has consequences. This is yours."

Before she could scream another insult, two police cruisers pulled up to the curb with their lights flashing. The officers didn't hesitate. They pushed Vanessa against the hood of her sports car, clicking the heavy metal handcuffs into place. Across town, another squad car was already arriving at my mother's rental home.

The empire of vanity they had built on the backs of hardworking people had completely collapsed.
