Chapter 1: The Sovereign of the Streets

The freezing rain seemed to suspend in mid-air as Lucas’s words echoed through the manicured courtyard. “The mechanic you dismissed tonight is the owner of this house.”
My mother’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. Her hand gripped the cold iron railing of the grand porch so tightly her knuckles turned a ghostly white. Beside her, Vanessa looked as if she had just watched a ghost rise from the muddy gravel. The silk pajamas she had been flaunting suddenly looked absurdly cheap beneath the piercing glare of the three black, armored SUVs idling in our driveway.
Lucas didn't wait for them to process the shock. He stepped closer to me, his gleaming leather shoes stepping right over the broken glass of our wedding photo without a single glance downward. His black cashmere coat brushed against the downpour, shedding water like a shield. When his eyes fell on the blood staining my lip and my scraped, bleeding palms, the calm authority in his face instantly hardened into a terrifying, glacial fury.
"Who pushed her?" Lucas asked. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a lethal, quiet resonance that cut straight through the roaring thunder.
"Lucas... what is the meaning of this theater?" my mother finally stammered, her voice trembling as she tried to reclaim her haughty demeanor. She looked at the six towering security guards standing in a protective semi-circle around the vehicles, all clad in matching black tactical suits. "You're a mechanic. You work at the Northside Auto Body shop! Where did you get these cars? Did you steal from your employers? Did you borrow this suit to play a joke on us?"
"A joke?" Lucas sneered, a dark, humorless smile touching his lips. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a leather-bound folder, tossing it onto the top step right at Vanessa's feet. "Pick it up, Vanessa. Since you love accounting books so much, read the title deed on the first page."
Vanessa, her hands shaking violently, knelt down and opened the folder. The rain smeared the ink slightly, but the embossed gold seal of the Municipal Registry was unmistakable.
"This... this is the deed to the estate," Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking as she looked up at our mother. "Mom... it doesn't say Dad's name anymore. It says... The Aurelius Trust. Represented by... Lucas Aurelius."
"Aurelius?" my mother gasped, the name hitting her like a physical blow.
The Aurelius Group was the largest conglomerate in the state, owning everything from the medical district to the shipping ports. For decades, the owner had remained a reclusive billionaire, refusing interviews and public appearances. My father had spent the last five years of his life begging for a single meeting with the Aurelius Group to secure a supply chain contract that would save our family company from bankruptcy.
"You thought your husband was an ordinary businessman, Elena?" Lucas turned his gaze back to me, the ice in his eyes instantly melting into a profound, aching tenderness. He knelt down in the mud, completely disregarding his multi-thousand-dollar Tom Ford suit, and gently took my bleeding hands in his. "I am so sorry I let you walk into this viper's nest alone tonight. I wanted to see if they had a shred of humanity left for you after your father's passing. I was wrong."
"Lucas..." I whispered, the tears finally breaking past my eyelids, warm against the freezing rain. "You... you're him?"
"I am the man who loved your father like a mentor, Elena," he said softly, wiping a smear of blood and rain from my cheek with his thumb. "And I am the man who promised him on his deathbed that I would strip these monsters of everything they stole from you. Your father didn't leave them the company, Elena. He sold 51% of the shares to me six months ago to pay off his hidden debts, under the condition that I would protect you when the time came."
Lucas stood up, pulling me effortlessly into his arms, lifting me completely away from the freezing mud. He turned his back on my mother and sister, walking toward the open door of the middle SUV.
"Lucas! Wait!" my mother screamed, running down the steps into the rain, her expensive hair ruining instantly. "We are family! There must be a misunderstanding! Thomas wouldn't do this to us!"
Lucas stopped by the car door, looking over his shoulder with an expression of pure disgust. "You have exactly twenty-four hours to pack your personal belongings and vacate this property. Tomorrow at sunset, my legal team arrives with an eviction notice. If you are still here, you will be removed by state marshals."

"You can't do this!" Vanessa shrieked, tears of rage and terror streaming down her face. "We are the rightful heirs!"
"The mechanic is the landlord now, Vanessa," Lucas replied coldly. "And my first rule is that trash belongs on the curb."
