Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Whitlock Dynasty

The fallout of the dock raid was catastrophic for the Whitlock family.

By morning, Arthur Whitlock and his top lieutenants were in federal custody, charged with international trafficking and kidnapping. The syndicate council, realizing the Whitlocks were a sinking ship, immediately seized all their remaining assets, transferring the lucrative shipping routes directly to Daniel Carver.

Claire Whitlock was left with nothing. Her father was in prison, her family fortune was gone, and her name was ruined.

At the Carver mansion, the reunion between Hannah and Caleb was a storm of tears and tight embraces. Caleb was bruised and weak, but the estate's private doctor assured them he would make a full recovery.

"I thought I lost you," Hannah sobbed, holding her brother’s face in her hands.

"I thought I was dead, Han," Caleb whispered, his voice cracking. "But Daniel... he came for me. He didn't have to, but he did."

Hannah looked across the room at Daniel, who was standing by the window, giving them space. Her heart swelled with a feeling she hadn't felt since Aaron’s death—a feeling of safety, of hope, and of a deep, quiet love.

Suddenly, a sharp, white-hot pain shot through Hannah’s lower back. She gasped, her hands flying to her stomach as her knees buckled.

"Hannah!" Daniel was by her side before she could hit the floor, his arms catching her and lifting her onto the sofa.

"It’s... it’s too early," Hannah gasped, her breath coming in short, panicked pants. "The baby... the baby is coming."

The mansion erupted into controlled chaos. The private doctor, who was already on-site for Caleb, rushed into the room.

"She’s in active labor," the doctor announced, his face grave after a quick examination. "The stress of the past few weeks... her body can't hold it any longer. We need to deliver this baby now. We can't risk moving her to the hospital in this condition."

Daniel held Hannah’s hand, his grip tighter than it had ever been. For the first time since she had met him, she saw fear in his eyes.

"You're going to be okay, Hannah," he whispered, brushing her damp hair from her forehead. "I'm right here. I'm not leaving you."

"Daniel, if... if something happens to me," Hannah cried out as another contraction ripped through her, "promise me you’ll look after my baby. Promise me."

"Nothing is going to happen to you," Daniel said, his voice fierce with emotion.

"But I promise you this: from this day forward, your child is my child. Your family is my family. I will protect them with my life."
