Chapter 3 - The Media Wildfire

By eight o’clock the next morning, the storm outside had cleared, leaving behind a world of pristine, blinding white. But on the internet, a different kind of storm was raging, and it was burning through social media like a wildfire.

Because the winter gala had been packed with local media moguls, politicians, and high-society influencers, the secret could not be kept. A thirty-second video clip, captured by a shocked guest from behind a flower arrangement, had been uploaded to social media.

It showed Vivienne Mercer holding the severed braid, her diamonds flashing, while a heavily pregnant Mara knelt in her gray staff apron. Then, it showed Julian’s dramatic entrance, his fierce declaration—"Why is my wife on the floor?"—and him carrying her out into the snow.

The public reaction was instantaneous and savage.

Inside the cozy, fire-lit living room of the Narragansett cottage, Mara sat on the sofa with a mug of hot ginger tea, her laptop open. The video had already gathered over ten million views, and the comments sections were exploding.

@NewportInsider: This is sickening! Vivienne Mercer literally assaulted a pregnant woman on camera. This isn't high society, it's medieval cruelty!

@BostonLegalEagle: Did he say WIFE? If they are legally married, Vivienne just assaulted her daughter-in-law and the future heir to the Mercer estate. The lawsuits are going to be legendary.

@JusticeForMara: Look at her poor face. She was hiding her pregnancy under a servant’s apron. Shame on the Mercers! Protect this woman at all costs.

"The board of trustees is in absolute chaos," Julian said, walking into the living room with a fresh pot of coffee. His phone was buzzing continuously on the kitchen counter, but he had put it on silent. "My mother’s public relations team tried to release a statement claiming it was a 'creative theatrical performance' to highlight historical staff conditions, but nobody is buying it. Two major corporate donors have already pulled their funding from the foundation’s spring charity drive."

"And your mother?" Mara asked, looking up.

"She’s barricaded inside the mansion with her lawyers," Julian said, his face hardening as he sat beside her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "They’re preparing a counter-attack, Mara. Richard Vance, her lead attorney, just sent me an email. They are going to claim our marriage in Providence is invalid due to 'fraudulent intent.' They want to paint you as a calculating grifter who targeted an unstable heir."

Mara’s hand went to her hair, her fingers catching on the short, jagged ends. "Let them try. We have the marriage certificate, we have the medical reports of the scratch from last night, and most importantly, we have the Carroway files."

"We need to find Clara Vance," Julian said, his eyes filled with a sharp, strategic light. "She is Thomas Carroway's granddaughter, and she still lives in South Boston. If she joins us, we don't just defend ourselves against a defamation suit—we take the offensive. We sue the Mercer estate for historical asset fraud on behalf of the Carroway heirs."

Mara looked at her husband, seeing the fierce, protective man who had thrown away a lifetime of privilege to stand by her side on a cold marble floor.

"It will destroy your family’s name forever, Julian," she whispered.

"No, sweetheart," Julian said, gently kissing the scratch on her hairline. "It will clean it. It's time to build a legacy our daughter can actually be proud of."
