Chapter 2 - The Refuge of the Storm

The heavy oak doors of the mansion closed behind them with a solid, echoing thud, cutting off the heat and the suffocating judgment of the high-society crowd.

Instantly, the howling Newport blizzard hit them. The wind shrieked off the Atlantic, whipping sheets of icy snow across the expansive lawns. Julian’s black SUV sat idling at the bottom of the steps, its headlights cutting through the white darkness. Arthur, Julian’s loyal personal driver and one of the very few people who knew the truth of their marriage, had already leaped out to open the rear door.

"Sir! Oh my god, Mrs. Mercer," Arthur gasped, his stoic face twisting with horror as he saw Mara’s hair and the pale, exhausted look on her face.

"Get the heater on high, Arthur. We’re going to the Narragansett cottage," Julian commanded, his voice tight as he carefully settled Mara onto the soft leather of the back seat. He climbed in beside her, immediately pulling a thick cashmere blanket over her shivering body.

The door slammed shut, sealing them inside a quiet, warm sanctuary. The SUV shifted into gear, its heavy tires crunching over the snow-slick gravel of the long driveway, leaving the glowing, hostile fortress of the Mercer estate behind.

For several miles, the only sound was the low hum of the engine and the rhythmic, steady sweep of the windshield wipers.

Julian pulled Mara tightly against his chest, his hands still shaking as he stroked her back. He gently peeled away the wet, gray staff apron, tossing it onto the floorboards. Underneath, her simple wool maternity dress showed the heavy, beautiful curve of her belly. He placed his warm palm over her abdomen, closing his eyes in silent relief as he felt a strong, rhythmic kick beneath his hand.

"She’s okay," Mara whispered, her hand resting over his. "She’s just... she’s been active all evening. I think she knew I was scared, Julian."

"I am so sorry, Mara," Julian choked out, his forehead resting against hers. A single, heavy tear of anger and guilt slipped down his cheek, landing on her nose. "I should have never left for London. I should have defied my mother months ago and announced our marriage. I let my fear of losing the foundation legacy put you in danger."

"We both made that choice, Julian," Mara said softly, her eyes holding a quiet, unbreakable strength despite her physical exhaustion. "We wanted to wait until the Carroway archive acquisition was legally secured. We knew Vivienne would try to block it if she found out I was more than just a quiet employee."

"She knows something is in those archives, Mara," Julian said, his jaw clenching. "Why else would she resort to such a public, barbaric display? She wanted to humiliate you so deeply that you would run away and never speak of what you found."

Mara reached into her small, hidden pocket beneath her dress and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive. Her fingers were cold, but her grip was tight.

"She was too late," Mara said, a faint, determined smile touching her lips. "I spent the last three days digitalizing the private ledgers from 1928. Julian... your grandfather Arthur Mercer didn't buy out the Carroway shipping lines. He blackmailed Thomas Carroway using forged bank records, and when Thomas threatened to go to the authorities, Arthur used his political influence to have Thomas committed to an asylum in Providence, where he died."

Julian stared at the small drive, his heart turning cold. The Mercer philanthropic empire—the foundation he had dedicated his life to running—was built on a foundation of kidnapping, forgery, and stolen lives.

"If this gets out," Julian whispered, "the Mercer Foundation will face monumental civil lawsuits. The entire estate could be liquidated."

"And Vivienne knows it," Mara said. "That’s why she tried to destroy me tonight. But we aren't running, Julian. We're going to use this."
