Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Six months later.

The high-pitched chirping of medical monitors was completely gone, replaced by the soft, cheerful sound of wind chimes rustling in the summer breeze.

The Kade estate in Lake Forest had undergone a complete transformation. The cold, sterile security protocols remained beneath the surface, but the grand living rooms were now filled with warm sunlight, plush carpets, soft pastel toys, and the lively sound of classical music.

Dominic Moretti and his corrupt political allies were gone, stripped of their power and assets, spending the rest of their lives in federal maximum-security prisons. Chicago’s criminal underworld had been entirely restructured under Weston’s absolute, quiet control—a control he now used to systematically dismantle street violence and fund legitimate community development across the city.

In the nursery overlooking the rose garden, seven-month-old Owen lay on his stomach on a soft play mat. He was no longer the frail, four-pound infant clinging to life in a glass box. He was a chubby, healthy, laughing boy weighing a thriving seventeen pounds, with bright brown eyes and a head full of soft dark hair.

Priya sat on the floor beside him, rolling a small red ball toward him. "Come on, Owen," she encouraged gently. "Reach for it!"

Owen let out a happy squeal, pushing up on his strong little arms and wriggling forward, his tiny fingers grabbing the ball triumphantly.

"Look at that," a deep, rich voice spoke from the doorway.

Priya turned to see Weston standing there. He had abandoned his usual stark black suits for a comfortable dark navy sweater. The cold, dangerous lines on his face had been smoothed away by months of peace, replaced by a profound, relaxed warmth whenever he looked at his son—and the woman beside him.

Weston walked into the room, knelt beside Priya, and picked Owen up in his arms. The baby instantly babbled and grabbed at his father’s collar.

"Dr. Chen checked his developmental scores this morning," Weston said, looking at Priya with deep pride. "He said Owen has completely caught up to his age group. Zero residual neurological or pulmonary deficits. He's perfect."

"I told you he was a fighter," Priya said softly, leaning her shoulder against Weston’s arm as they watched the baby play with his father’s watch.

"He fought because he had the best nurse in the world," Weston murmured. He turned his head, his face inches from hers. "And because he had you."

Priya felt a gentle warmth spread through her chest. Over the past six months, she had officially resigned from St. Jude Memorial to head the newly established Genevieve & Priya Pediatric Foundation, a billion-dollar charity funded by Weston to provide high-end, free medical care to underprivileged children across Illinois. But while her professional life had blossomed, her personal life had become inextricably woven into the fabric of Weston and Owen’s world.

They spent every evening together, sharing quiet dinners, talking about their dreams, and raising Owen as a team. The fierce, unspoken passion that had ignited in the middle of gunfire and hospital corridors had grown into a deep, unwavering love.

Weston set Owen back down on his play mat with a set of soft blocks, then turned fully to Priya. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

Priya’s breath hitched. Her hand flew to her lips.

"Priya," Weston said, his voice rich with emotion. "Six months ago, I was a man living in absolute darkness, waiting for my son to die. You walked into that room and saved him. But you didn't just save Owen. You saved me."

He opened the box, revealing a breath-taking custom ring featuring a flawless, radiant-cut yellow diamond flanked by two small sapphire stones symbolizing new life and protection.

"I know who I was, and I know the dark world I came from," Weston continued, taking her hand gently in his. "But every day with you makes me a better man. You are the heart of this family. I don't want another day on this earth without you by my side."

He looked into her eyes with pure, unarmored vulnerability. "Priya Osei, will you marry me and be Owen’s mother?"
