Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Siege

The rain had turned to sleet by Wednesday morning, wrapping the city of Providence in a grey, icy shroud. Inside the high-rise headquarters of the Mercer Foundation, the board of trustees had gathered for an emergency meeting.

Vivienne Mercer sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking immaculate in a tailored charcoal suit. She looked around the room, satisfied. She had spent the last forty-eight hours ensuring that every member of the board understood their duty: vote to remove Julian from his position as co-chair, and approve a public statement condemning Mara Bell.

"I believe we have a quorum," Vivienne said, her voice smooth and commanding. "Let us begin the vote to strip Julian Mercer of his trusteeship due to conduct unbecoming of—"

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom slid open.

Julian walked in first, wearing a simple navy suit. But he did not command the room's attention. That belonged to Mara, who walked beside him. She wore a high-necked black dress that elegantly accentuated her pregnancy, and her hair—which had been professionally cut into a chic, symmetrical bob that grazed her jawline—made her look modern, fierce, and entirely striking.

"Julian," Vivienne said, her eyes narrowing to dangerous slits. "You are not permitted in this meeting. And she is trespassing. Security!"

"Don't bother, Grandmother," Julian said, tossing a thick stack of printed documents onto the center of the table. "Before you call security, I suggest the trustees take a look at page four."

One of the older trustees, a retired judge who had always been fond of Julian’s father, picked up the document. His eyebrows rose as he scanned the pages. "Vivienne... what is this?"

"It is the original, unredacted acquisition agreement for the Carroway collection," Mara said, her voice ringing out with absolute authority. She stepped closer to the table, looking directly at the board members who had ignored her for years.

"For two years, I cataloged these files. While doing so, I discovered that Mrs. Mercer used her private holding company to illegally purchase the debt of the Carroway estate, using that leverage to force a hostile, tax-exempt 'donation' of historical artifacts. This is not philanthropy, gentlemen. This is tax fraud, extortion, and a direct violation of federal heritage laws."

The room erupted into a flurry of whispers. Trustees scrambled to grab copies of the documents.

"This is a lie!" Vivienne slammed her hand on the table, her composure finally shattering. "She is a disgruntled maid trying to save herself from a theft charge! I have the police report—"

"A police report based on fabricated evidence that our legal team has already disproven," Andrew, who had slipped into the room behind Julian, stated calmly. "We have also submitted the original, unedited footage of the ballroom incident from last Saturday to the Rhode Island District Attorney. The charges of felony assault against you, Vivienne, have already been drafted."

Vivienne looked around the room, expecting her allies to stand up for her. But she saw only averted eyes, pale faces, and the sudden, chilling realization that the Mercer empire was about to collapse.

"You think you can destroy me?" Vivienne hissed, her voice shaking with a lifetime of unchecked rage. "I built this foundation! I built all of you!"

"And you destroyed yourself," Julian said quietly. "The board will now vote on your immediate removal as chair. If you resist, we release these documents to the press in ten minutes."
