Chapter 2 - The Overnight War

The drive back to Julian’s private cottage in Bristol was silent, save for the steady hum of the car’s heater and the rhythmic sweep of the windshield wipers. Mara huddled beneath his overcoat, her hand resting protectively over her belly. The baby had finally stopped kicking, settling into a quiet rhythm that matched her own slow breathing.

Once inside the cottage, Julian immediately set to work. He didn't pace; he went straight to the kitchen, preparing a warm cup of herbal tea while Mara sat on the sofa, staring into the dark fireplace.

"I’m sorry, Mara," Julian said softly, kneeling in front of her and placing the mug in her hands. His eyes were red, the anger in them replaced by a profound, agonizing guilt. "I should have been there. If I hadn't taken that later flight, if I had just announced our marriage to the board last month—"

"You couldn't have known she would do this, Julian," Mara whispered. She reached out, her fingers gently tracing the sharp line of his jaw. "Vivienne has always been cruel, but tonight... tonight she realized she was losing control. That’s what made her desperate."

Julian leaned his forehead against her knee, his shoulders shaking slightly. "I will never let her touch you again. I swear it."

But the peace of the cottage was short-lived. By 2:00 AM, Julian’s phone began to vibrate incessantly on the kitchen counter.

It was Andrew, his college roommate and the lawyer who had drafted their private marriage agreement.

"Julian, you need to turn on the news or check your tablet right now," Andrew’s voice was tense, stripped of its usual easygoing humor. "Vivienne’s PR machine has been working overtime. They’ve already spun the story."

Julian opened his laptop, Mara leaning over his shoulder. The headlines on the major high-society blogs and local news outlets were already live:

"MERCER FOUNDATION HEIR VICTIM OF EXTORTION: ELDERLY MATRIARCH ATTACKED BY DISGRUNTLED STAFF MEMBER."

The articles claimed that Mara had been caught attempting to steal rare first-edition books from the Carroway archive to sell on the black market. According to the statement released by Vivienne’s lawyers, when confronted, Mara had "become hysterical and physically aggressive," forcing Mrs. Mercer to defend herself. The cut on Mara's hair was described as an "accidental consequence of a struggle to restrain an unstable individual."

"She’s turning you into the criminal, Mara," Julian muttered, his fist clenching on the desk. "She’s trying to invalidate our marriage by claiming you married me under false pretenses or drugged me. She’s already filing for a temporary restraining order on my behalf, claiming I’m a victim of coercive control."

"She wants to isolate us," Mara realized, a cold dread washing over her. "If she paints me as a thief and a fraud, the board will support her. No one will dare speak the truth about what they saw in that ballroom."

"Then we don't play by her rules anymore," Julian said, his eyes flashing with a cold, dangerous resolve. "She thinks she owns the narrative because she owns the papers. But she doesn't own the truth."
