Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The emergency board meeting of Graves Energy Corporation was convened at 8:00 PM on the top floor of Graves Tower.

Twenty of the state's most powerful financial magnates, corporate attorneys, and major stockholders sat around the massive mahogany conference table in the glass-walled boardroom, looking nervous and confused.

At the head of the table sat Julian Graves. He wore a crisp dark suit, a red silk tie, and a victorious smile that he barely tried to hide.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Julian began, standing up and placing his hands on the polished table. "I thank you for gathering on such short notice. As you know, my brother Nathaniel has suffered severe emotional distress over the past forty-eight hours. His sudden unannounced cancellation of yesterday's executive meeting, combined with irrational actions regarding corporate property, has forced our hand."

Julian gestured to his legal team, who began passing thick black folders to each board member.

"Before you are the documents for Motion 104," Julian continued, his voice echoing with practiced authority. "A petition to declare Nathaniel Graves temporarily unfit to exercise voting authority, transferring full CEO executive powers to me as Vice Chairman. We must preserve the stability of our stock before rumor spreads to the markets."

"Julian," one senior board member, Lord Harrington, spoke up, frowning as he read the folder. "Nathaniel has led this corporation flawlessly for twenty years. You are asking us to stage a corporate coup without giving him a chance to defend himself!"

"Nathaniel is not here, Harrington!" Julian snapped, his smile slipping for a second. "He is isolated at his estate, refusing to answer corporate comms! We must vote NOW!"

"I wouldn't call a vote just yet, Julian."

A deep, commanding voice echoed from the back of the boardroom.

The heavy double glass doors swept open.

Through the doorway walked Nathaniel Graves.

He was impeccably dressed, walking with calm, absolute authority, flanked by his head of security, Arthur, and two federal marshals in dark coats.

Beside Nathaniel walked my mother, Maya, wearing a stunning, elegant emerald dress, her chin held high with grace and dignity. And walking right between them, holding both of their hands tightly, was me.

Gasps of absolute shock filled the boardroom. Several board members stood up from their chairs in utter disbelief.

"M-Maya Lin?!" Lord Harrington gasped, his eyes bulging. "She's... she's alive?!"

Julian’s face turned from red to chalk-white in a fraction of a second. He stumbled backward against his leather chair, clutching the edge of the table as if his legs had turned to water.

"No..." Julian stammered, his voice breaking into a terrified squeak. "No... it's impossible... Boris was supposed to..."

"Boris is currently in federal custody, brother," Nathaniel said smoothly, walking up to the head of the table.

Nathaniel signaled to Arthur, who opened a heavy briefcase and placed a glowing tablet onto the center of the conference table.

A high-definition video feed played automatically. It showed Boris, sitting in a metal interrogation room, weeping as he confessed into a microphone:

"...Julian Graves ordered the hit. He paid me two hundred thousand dollars to set fire to the east wing of the estate tonight. He wanted Maya Lin and Nathaniel's daughter, Ruby, dead so they couldn't claim the family voting trust..."

The boardroom erupted into absolute chaos. Board members shouted in disgust, pushing their chairs back from Julian as if he were a poisonous snake.

"You monster!" Lord Harrington shouted at Julian. "You tried to murder a child?!"

Nathaniel turned to the two federal marshals standing at the door.

"Gentlemen," Nathaniel said calmly, "in addition to attempted murder, you will find in this briefcase ten years of audited forensic evidence proving Julian Graves embezzled forty-two million dollars from our clean-energy research foundation and funneled it into offshore accounts in Panama."

The two federal marshals stepped forward, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from their belts.

"Julian Graves," the lead marshal declared, grabbing Julian’s arms and slamming him face-down onto the mahogany conference table. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted arson. You have the right to remain silent."

Julian screamed and struggled as the handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. As the marshals dragged him toward the door, Julian looked at my mother, then at Nathaniel, and finally at me.

His eyes were filled with pure, pathetic defeat.

Nathaniel stepped up to the head of the table, taking his rightful seat as Chief Executive Officer. He looked around the room at the remaining board members, his presence commanding absolute respect.

"Motion 104 is officially dismissed," Nathaniel declared firmly. "And I have one final announcement before we adjourn tonight."

He reached out, gently taking my small hand and pulling me up to stand beside his chair.

"This is Ruby Lin Graves," Nathaniel said, his voice ringing with immense pride and tears of pure happiness. "My daughter. My legal heir. And the future of Graves Energy Corporation."

The entire boardroom stood up and erupted into thunderous, unanimous applause.
