Chapter 7 - Midnight Traitors

Night fell heavy and dark over Puget Sound. Rain began to patter gently against the grand bay window of my new bedroom, creating a soothing rhythm that should have put me to sleep.

Instead, I sat up in my soft canopy bed, staring at the brass telescope near the window.

Downstairs, the house was silent. My mother was sleeping soundly in the master suite across the hall, exhausted from the years of emotional strain and physical labor. Nathaniel was in his study on the ground floor, working late with his legal team to file emergency injunctions against his brother.

I swung my legs over the edge of the bed, putting on my plush new slippers, and walked over to the balcony door.

I pushed the glass door open a crack to smell the clean, crisp rain air.

As I looked down at the dark rose gardens thirty feet below, a sudden flash of movement caught my eye.

Near the eastern stone wall—where the thick ivy grew over the tall iron fence—two shadows detached themselves from the darkness. They were dressed in full black tactical gear, carrying heavy canvas bags and long metallic cylinders.

My heart skipped a beat.

I leaned closer to the glass. One of the men pulled a handheld electronic device from his vest, pointing it at the motion-sensor light mounted on the garage wall. The bright security light flickered once, then died completely, plunging the eastern courtyard into pitch-black darkness.

"That's strange..." I whispered to myself, remembering what Nathaniel had told me earlier about the estate's security system. Nothing turns off unless someone turns it off from inside.

The two shadows moved silently across the lawn, heading straight for the basement door directly beneath the east wing—the exact floor where my bedroom and Nathaniel's private archive room were located.

I didn't scream. I didn't panic. Living four years on Aldridge Street had taught me that when danger approached, staying quiet and moving fast was the only way to survive.

I slipped out of my bedroom into the dark, carpeted hallway, running as fast as my quiet slippers would carry me toward the grand staircase.

I sprinted down the stairs, my heart pounding in my chest, and ran straight into Nathaniel's dimly lit study at the back of the ground floor.

Nathaniel was sitting at his large mahogany desk, surrounded by stacks of legal folders, reading a document under the warm light of a brass lamp. He looked up, surprised to see me awake.

"Ruby?" Nathaniel smiled gently, setting his reading glasses down. "Sweetheart, why aren't you asleep? Is the storm scaring you?"

"Dad," I panted, running to his desk and grabbing his arm. "There are two men in black clothes in the rose garden. They turned off the garage light with a little black box, and they're breaking into the basement door under my room!"

Nathaniel’s smile vanished instantly. His body went rigid, his hazel eyes locking onto mine with fierce intensity.

"Are you sure, Ruby?" he asked, his voice dropping into a low, deadly register.

"Yes! They had heavy bags and big metal cans!"

Nathaniel didn't hesitate for a single second. He reached under his desk and pressed a hidden red button concealed beneath the polished wood.

Instantly, a silent alarm triggered throughout the estate.

On a hidden monitor behind his bookshelf, six tactical camera feeds flickered to life. On Camera 4, showing the eastern basement entrance, two men in black masks were using a specialized torch to melt the heavy steel lock on the basement door. Beside them sat three large yellow canisters labeled LIQUID ACCELERANT.

Nathaniel’s face turned into a mask of pure, terrifying fury.

"Julian..." Nathaniel growled, his hand tightening into a fist. "You brought fire to my home."

He grabbed his heavy walking cane, pulled a hidden lever in the handle, and with a metallic CLICK, a eight-inch polished steel blade slid out from the tip of the cane.

He looked down at me, his eyes full of fierce, protective love.

"Ruby, go to your mother's room immediately. Lock the reinforced door from the inside and do not open it for anyone except me or Arthur. Do you understand?"

May you like

"Dad, be careful!" I pleaded, wrapping my arms around his waist for a brief second.

Nathaniel kissed the top of my head softly. "I survived twelve years without my family, Ruby. I am not letting anyone take you away tonight."
