Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Vances

The silence in the ballroom was absolute, save for the clicking of a single camera from a brave reporter near the stage.

Victoria Vance stood on the steps of the podium, her hand gripping the microphone stand so tightly the metal creaked. Her eyes locked onto Lyra, and for a fraction of a second, the cold, untouchable matriarch looked truly, deeply terrified.

"This is a disruption of a private charitable event!" Victoria screamed into the microphone, her voice echoing painfully through the speakers. "Security, escort these people out immediately!"

"The security guards are federal employees tonight, Mrs. Vance," Christian Mercer said, his voice calm, steady, and carrying the weight of absolute victory. He stepped onto the stage, holding a thick legal folder.

"Under authority of the United States District Court, we have executed an emergency freeze on all assets belonging to the Vance Botanical Foundation and its subsidiary holding companies," Christian announced to the crowd.

"Victoria and Alistair Vance, you are under investigation for federal wire fraud, embezzlement of federal grant funds, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit civil rights violations against your employees. The grand larceny charges against Lyra have been dismissed by the State Attorney’s office due to overwhelming evidence of police corruption and fabricated evidence."

Alistair Vance stumbled out of the side room, his face pale, his hands trembling as a federal agent stepped up behind him and placed him in handcuffs. "Victoria... they have everything," he whimpered. "The offshore logs... the emails... everything."

Victoria looked around the room, searching for a single friendly face among the three hundred guests she had spent her life trying to impress. But she found only disgust, pity, and a quiet, collective satisfaction. The very people who had watched her humiliate Lyra in her dining room were now watching her own public execution.

A federal agent stepped up to Victoria, producing a set of handcuffs. "Mrs. Vance, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you..."

As the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around Victoria’s wrists, her composure finally shattered. She screamed, a raw, ugly sound that had nothing to do with high society or elegance, her expensive hair falling messy over her face as she was led down the stage in front of the flashing cameras of the very press she had once owned.

Lyra stood at the back of the room, watching the woman who had tried to destroy her life being led away in disgrace. She didn't feel angry. She didn't feel vengeful. She felt only a deep, profound sense of peace.

She looked up at Christian, who had stepped down from the stage to stand beside her. He smiled, his eyes warm and filled with a quiet, private pride.

"It's over, Lyra," he whispered. "You're free."
