Chapter 3 - The Crack in the Marble

The following morning, the Vance estate was in a state of quiet panic.
Victoria sat in her morning room, her teacup rattling slightly against the saucer as she scrolled through her tablet. The dining room incident had not stayed behind the closed oak doors of the mansion. A guest—one of the younger philanthropists who had grown tired of Victoria's tyrannical control over the botanical board—had recorded a fifteen-second video of the soup throwing on their phone and uploaded it anonymously to social media.
By 8:00 AM, the video had already accumulated over fifty thousand views, with the caption: "The True Nature of Vance Philanthropy."
"Alistair, do something about this!" Victoria hissed, throwing the tablet onto the glass table. "Call the platform directors. Have it taken down. Say it’s a deepfake."
Alistair looked up from his newspaper, his face pale and drawn. "I tried, Victoria. But it's spreading too fast. Christian Mercer has already released a public statement confirming the authenticity of the video. He’s representing the girl. He’s filing civil charges for assault and emotional distress."
"Christian Mercer is an upstart who doesn't know his place," Victoria snarled, her perfect face contorting into the same ugly rage that had destroyed the dining room the night before. "I will have him removed from the board by this afternoon. And as for the girl... call Detective Briggs. Tell him we found a diamond necklace missing from my jewelry box after she left. Have her arrested for grand larceny."
"Victoria, is that wise?" Alistair hesitated. "With the video already viral, a sudden theft charge will look like retaliation."
"I don't care how it looks!" Victoria roared, standing up and pacing the floor. "I have spent thirty years building this family's reputation. I will not have it ruined by a common maid and a third-rate lawyer. Do as I say!"
Meanwhile, in Christian’s downtown office, the atmosphere was electric.
Lyra sat at the conference table, surrounded by stacks of financial documents. Her hair was clean and tied back neatly, and though she still wore a simple cotton dress, there was a new, quiet dignity in her posture.
"The feedback on social media is overwhelming, Lyra," Christian’s legal assistant, Sarah, said, showing her the thousands of supportive comments on the campaign page they had launched. "People are calling for a complete boycott of the Vance Foundation's annual gala next week. The donors are panicking."
"It’s not enough," Christian said, walking into the room with a fresh stack of papers. "Victoria is going to strike back, and she’s going to use the police. I just got word from a contact at the precinct that they’re drafting an arrest warrant for Lyra on a fabricated theft charge."

Lyra’s heart sank. "A theft charge? I’ve never stolen anything in my life!"
"I know," Christian said, kneeling beside her chair and taking her hand. "And we are going to prove it. But to do that, we need to go back into the lion's den. The annual gala is in four days, Lyra. It is Victoria's crown jewel. We are going to use that stage to expose her once and for all."
