Chapter 9: The Mayor's Betrayal

The wail of federal tactical sirens began to echo from the front driveway of the Alexandria Hotel, their bright red and blue lights cutting through the thick midnight fog outside the high arched windows. The grand ballroom was a scene of total corporate liquidation—the syndicate operators were being secured in heavy steel handcuffs by secret service agents, while the wealthy guests were being escorted out the front doors into waiting federal transport vans for formal questioning.
Mayor Thomas Miller walked onto the stage, his pristine white shirt covered in dust, his face looking hollow and broken. He held the signed resignation form in his hand, offering it to Frank like a beggar presenting his last coin.
"Here, Frank," the Mayor whispered, his voice trembling. "The resignation is complete. The asset transfers are active. My career is over. Just... promise me you’ll protect Julian. He’s my only son. He didn't know about the military encryption theft. He was just a stupid boy trying to make a quick buck."
Frank took the paper, checking the signature one last time under the red emergency lights before slipping it into his vest pocket. He looked over the Mayor’s shoulder at Julian, who was standing near the broken catering cart, holding his bruised ribs, looking at his father with a desperate, hopeful expression.
"You're a politician to the very end, Thomas," Frank said, a cold, humorless smile touching his lips. "You always try to sacrifice the pieces to save the king. But you lied to me tonight."
The Mayor froze, his jaw tightening in sudden terror. "What... what do you mean? I didn't lie! I signed everything!"
"You signed the resignation, Thomas, but your tech team was secretly executing a manual data wipe on your office's secondary server array while we were downstairs in the study," Frank said, pulling his tablet from his pocket and showing a blinking red notification banner. "You tried to delete the bank routing codes that connect your family firm to the political action committee in Washington. You thought that if you sacrificed your mayor's office, you could keep the forty million dollars in campaign funding you stole from the transit budget."
Julian’s eyes went wide with shock as he heard the words. He took a step toward his father, his face turning from pale to a fierce, burning red with anger. "Dad... what is he talking about? You told me the campaign funding was from private donors! You told me you were using that money to buy my apartment in Virginia! Did you steal that money from the city transit grants?!"
"Shut up, Julian!" the Mayor roared, turning on his son with his teeth bared in an animalistic snarl. "I did it for us! I did it to build an empire for you! You think a clean politician can pay for your country club memberships and your custom tuxedos?! I had to play the game!"
"You didn't do it for me, Dad!" Julian screamed, tears of pure fury and betrayal spilling over his eyelids. "You did it for your own ego! You let me take the blame for the hit-and-run! You let me handle the logistics for the syndicate because you were too afraid to put your own name on the paperwork! You used your own son as a human shield!"
"The family business is a beautiful thing, Thomas," Frank said smoothly, stepping between the two men. "But the business is closed tonight. Mark and the white-collar crime division have just crossed the perimeter line. They have the master arrest warrants for both of you."
Before the Mayor could reply, the heavy double doors of the ballroom were thrown open again. A team of six federal marshals in dark tactical vests walked inside, their weapons held across their chests, led by Chief Prosecutor Vance—Frank’s older son, and the head of the federal organized crime task force.

"Thomas Miller and Julian Miller," the prosecutor announced, his voice clear and professional as he pulled two sets of heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "You are under arrest for international wire fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit corporate espionage. Step forward and keep your hands visible."
Julian looked at his father, then at Frank Vance, who was calmly putting his gray security gloves back on. He realized, with a sickening feeling in his stomach, that his family's pride had just been completely demolished over a broken champagne glass.
