Chapter 3: The True Identity Exposed

Frank Vance stood under the glittering crystal chandeliers, looking like an executioner who had just been handed a final warrant. The cheap black suit no longer looked cheap; it looked like a uniform of absolute authority. The gray hair and the lines on his face didn't look like age anymore; they looked like decades of survival in the darkest corners of the government.

Mayor Miller fell to his knees right on the polished wood floor, his expensive designer trousers soaking up the spilled champagne from the broken glass. "Frank... please. I am your asset. I’ve done everything you asked for ten years. The city logistics contracts, the shipping port clearances... I routed them all through your holding companies! Don't let my son's stupidity destroy our alliance!"

"Your alliance was based on discretion, Thomas," Frank said, his voice flat and smooth as ice. "A man who cannot control his own household cannot control a capital city. If your son can attack an old man in front of two hundred witnesses because he thinks his daddy's title makes him a god, then your family has become a liability to my organization."

Julian was hyperventilating, his back pressed firmly against the marble pillar. He looked at his father groveling on the floor, then at Frank’s heavy, scarred hands. "Mr. Vance... please... I was drunk... I didn't mean it! Carter told me to do it! He said it would be funny!"

"Hey! Don't drag me into this!" Carter shouted from the back of the room, his face pale as he tried to hide behind a bridesmaid.

"Silence!" Frank didn't raise his voice, but the sheer coldness in his tone made everyone in the room flinch. He walked over to the main catering table, picked up a clean white cloth napkin, and slowly wiped the tiny bead of blood from his lip. "Julian, step forward."

Julian shook his head frantically, his knees trembling. "No... please..."

"I won't ask you a second time, son," Frank said softly.

Warden Thomas Miller scrambled over, grabbing his son’s trousers and dragging him forward onto his knees. "Do what he says, Julian! Get down! Beg him for your life!"

Julian collapsed onto his knees next to his father, looking up at Frank with wide, tear-filled eyes. The proud, arrogant groomsman who had been making jokes only ten minutes ago was completely gone.

"Last year, Julian," Frank said, leaning down to look into the young man's face, "you were involved in a vehicular hit-and-run accident on the north side of town. A young college student was hospitalized for three months. Your father used his police connections to delete the security camera footage and blame a local construction worker. Do you remember that?"

Julian’s jaw dropped in absolute horror. "How... how do you know about that? That file was completely destroyed!"

"Nothing is destroyed if it passes through a network that I built, Julian," Frank said, pulling a small black digital drive from his inside jacket pocket and tossing it onto the floorboards in front of the Mayor. "That drive contains the original unredacted video files, the hospital reports, and the recorded phone calls of your father ordering the police chief to alter the registry. I kept it as an insurance policy. It seems the premium is due tonight."

Mayor Miller looked at the black drive as if it were a venomous snake. "Frank... if you hand that to the federal prosecutor, I’ll lose the election next month! I’ll go to prison for obstruction of justice!"

"You should have thought about the election before your son decided to play the king in my ballroom, Thomas," Frank said. He reached down, grabbed Julian by his silk necktie, and hoisted the young man to his feet with an unnatural, terrifying physical strength that defied his sixty years. "Now, we are going to walk down to the private study downstairs. We have some paperwork to sign. And if any of your little security boys try to follow us, the red light on that ceiling camera will switch to a federal broadcast."

Frank turned and walked toward the catering exit, dragging Julian by his collar like a bag of garbage. The Mayor scrambled to his feet, grabbing the black drive from the floor, and hurried after them like a frightened dog, leaving the two hundred wedding guests standing in an empty, silent nightmare.
