Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Realm

Spring arrived in Chicago four months later. The ice melted from the lakeshore, and green buds began to bloom across the trees of the city.

The Moretti estate in Gold Coast had undergone a total transformation. The cold, dark, oppressive atmosphere that Lorenzo had cultivated for years was gone. The dark curtains had been pulled back, allowing bright sunlight to flood the marble hallways and spacious rooms.

In the sunlit garden behind the mansion, Clara sat in a plush armchair, wrapped in a light cashmere sweater. She had gained back her healthy weight, her skin was glowing, and her silver-streaked dark hair fell gracefully over her shoulders. She was reading a book while watching two gardeners plant fresh violet hydrangeas along the stone wall.

I stepped out onto the patio, carrying a tray with three cups of coffee and fresh pastries from Dominic’s bakery.

"You're spoiling us, Michael," Clara laughed softly as I set the tray down on the iron table beside her.

"I'm making up for twelve years of lost time," I smiled, sitting down across from her.

"How are the family businesses doing?" Clara asked, taking a sip of her coffee.

"Clean," I answered proudly. "We’ve completely divested from illegal gambling and narcotics. Dominic and Frank are managing our logistics and shipping firms. The Moretti name is officially a legitimate corporate entity. Just like Father always wanted before Lorenzo corrupted him."

"And the foundation?"

"The Clara Moretti Foundation for Abused Women and Children opened its first shelter downtown yesterday," I reported. "Beatrice oversaw the ribbon-cutting ceremony herself."

Right on cue, the glass doors of the patio slid open, and Beatrice stepped out.

She no longer wore the faded black maid's uniform. She was dressed in an elegant ivory blazer and tailored trousers, her dark hair styled neatly above her shoulders. She looked stunning, radiating a natural grace, intelligence, and confidence that had been buried under years of hardship.

"Did I hear someone mention my foundation?" Beatrice teased, walking over to the table with a bright smile.

"Your foundation is doing incredible work, Beatrice," Clara said, reaching out to hug her around the waist. "Michael was just telling me about the opening."

Beatrice sat down beside me, taking a pastry from the tray. She looked at me, her brown eyes soft and warm. "I couldn't have done it without the chief executive officer backing every project."

Over the past four months, the bond between Beatrice and me had grown into something far deeper than gratitude. We had spent countless late nights in the study, discussing the future of the family, sharing our past hurts, and building a foundation of mutual trust and quiet affection. She was no longer just the woman who saved my sister; she was the heart of my home.

"I have a surprise for both of you," I said, reaching into my jacket pocket and pulling out two velvet boxes.

I placed one box in front of Clara and the other in front of Beatrice.

Clara opened hers first. Inside lay a gorgeous gold necklace featuring a polished violet amethyst stone, carved into the shape of a blooming rose.

"Michael... it's breathtaking," Clara whispered, tears shining in her eyes.

"It represents a new beginning," I told her softly.

Beatrice opened her box. Inside lay a simple, stunning platinum ring set with a clear, brilliant diamond that caught the afternoon sunlight.

Beatrice gasped, looking up at me in shock, her breath catching in her throat. "Michael... what is this?"

I reached across the table, gently taking her hand in mine, my heart beating with a nervous warmth I hadn't felt since I was a young boy.

"Beatrice," I said, my voice filled with rich, honest emotion. "Four months ago, I thought I knew everything about power. I thought money, fear, and control were all that mattered. But you showed me that true power lies in love, sacrifice, and loyalty. You restored my sister to me, and in doing so, you saved my soul."

I squeezed her fingers gently.

"I don't want you to just be part of this home, Beatrice. I want you to be my wife. I want to build a future with you."

Beatrice stared at me, tears overflowing her eyes, a radiant, beautiful smile breaking across her face.

May you like

"Yes," she whispered, her voice rich with joy. "Yes, Michael! A thousand times yes!"

Clara clapped her hands happily, cheering as I stood up, pulled Beatrice into my arms, and kissed her deeply beneath the warm spring sunshine.
