Chapter 2 - The Shattered Mirage

I didn't realize I had stepped through the door until the ancient floorboards groaned beneath my heavy boots.
Beatrice whipped around with a gasp, dropping the plastic fork onto the floor. Her face drained of every drop of color, turning as white as the snow outside. She threw herself in front of the mattress, spreading her arms wide to block my view of the sick woman.
"Mr. Moretti!" Beatrice cried out, her voice cracking with pure terror. "Please! Please, sir! It was just leftovers! I'll work for free! I'll leave the city! Just don't hurt her! Please, I beg you!"
I ignored Beatrice completely. My eyes were locked entirely on the woman behind her.
Clara shrank back against the damp brick wall, her violet eyes widening in absolute horror as she recognized me. She raised a frail, trembling hand to her mouth, a quiet sob tearing from her throat.
"Michael..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the space heater. "No... no, please..."
"Clara?" My voice sounded foreign to my own ears—stripped of its usual cold, commanding authority, reduced to that of a frightened boy.
I took two slow steps forward. Beatrice flinched, closing her eyes as if expecting a bullet, but I gently laid a hand on her shoulder and pushed her aside. I fell to my knees directly beside the mattress, my tailored trousers soaking up the damp filth of the floor.
I reached out with a trembling, scarred hand, hovering over Clara’s face, afraid that if I touched her, she would dissolve into dust like a ghost.
"Is it... is it really you?" I choked out, a knot forming in my throat that threatened to strangle me.
Clara leaned away from my touch, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "Don't touch me," she rasped, her eyes filled not with familial warmth, but with profound, heartbreaking fear. "Please, Michael... you took everything from me. Haven't you done enough?"
The words hit me like a sledgehammer to the chest.
"Took everything from you?" I repeated, bewildered. "Clara, what are you talking about? You died! Salvatore blew up your car twelve years ago! I buried you!"
Clara let out a bitter, wet laugh that turned into a violent coughing fit. Beatrice rushed forward with a cup of stale water, helping Clara take a small sip before glaring at me with a fierce, protective defiance I had never seen in a domestic servant.
"Stop lying to her!" Beatrice shouted at me, her tears overflowing. "You know what you did! You broke her! You forced her into hiding!"
"Shut up!" I snapped, my mafia instincts flaring for a fraction of a second before I suppressed them. I looked back at Clara, my mind spinning in wild, chaotic circles. "Clara, look at me. Look into my eyes. I have spent twelve years mourning you. I destroyed the Venturis, I wiped out Salvatore’s entire line, I built an empire so no one could ever hurt our family again!"
Clara looked at me, her violet eyes searching my face with a mixture of confusion and deep-seated agony.
"Salvatore didn't blow up my car, Michael," Clara whispered, her words tearing through the silence of the room. "Salvatore saved my life. He pulled me out of the vehicle before it exploded."
"What?" My breath hitched. "Salvatore was a traitor! He wanted the throne!"
"Salvatore wanted to protect me from you," Clara said, her voice shaking violently. "Twelve years ago, after Father died, you came to my house. You told me that if I didn't surrender my shares of the family business, you would kill me and my unborn child. You said a woman had no place leading the Moretti empire."
I stared at her in absolute, horrific silence.
"I... I never said that," I breathed, the ground beneath my knees feeling like it was collapsing into a dark abyss. "Clara, I was twenty-three! I was in New York attending Father's funeral arrangements when your car exploded! I never came to your house! I didn't even know you were pregnant!"
Clara froze. The sheer, raw confusion and agonized honesty in my voice seemed to pierce through twelve years of conditioned terror.
"You... you didn't send the letter?" Clara asked, her voice cracking. "The signed execution order? The recordings of your voice telling the captains that I was a liability that needed to be erased?"
"No!" I roared, tears finally spilling over my eyes. "No! I loved you! You were my sister! I would have given you the entire empire if you had asked for it!"
Beatrice stood by the wall, stunned into complete silence as she watched the most feared mob boss in Chicago weeping on his knees before a dying woman.
Clara stared at me, her hands trembling uncontrollably. "If... if it wasn't you... then who came to my house that night wearing your ring? Who showed me the tape? Who forged your signature?"
A cold, dark realization began to crystallize in the depths of my mind. A face materialized in my memory—a face that had stood beside me for twelve years, feeding my grief, guiding my rage, and pointing my gun at every rival who got in our way.
Lorenzo Vale.

My lieutenant. My right-hand man. The man who had been my father’s consigliere before becoming mine.
Before I could say his name out loud, the sharp sound of leather soles echoing down the hallway shattered the quiet of the room.
