Chapter 4 - The Shadows Fight Back

Though Evelyn was behind bars, her vast wealth and decades-old network of corrupt associates did not crumble overnight.
Within four hours of her arrest, Arthur Sterling pulled off a legal miracle. Leveraging an elite team of criminal lawyers and a sympathetic judge, they secured Evelyn's release on a massive ten-million-dollar bail, pending trial. The conditions required her to wear an ankle monitor and remain under house arrest at her secondary estate, a heavily guarded mansion outside the city limits.
That night, Maya was discharged from the hospital with Oliver. Ryan moved them into a high-security, undisclosed suite at a hotel owned by a trusted personal friend, far away from the paparazzi and the noise.
Oliver was resting peacefully in the bedroom, holding his favorite stuffed bear. Maya sat on the edge of the bed, applying ointment to the faint yellowing bruise across the bridge of her nose.
Ryan sat down beside her, gently taking the ointment from her hands and applying it himself. His touch was feather-light, filled with unspoken remorse.
"I'm so sorry, Maya," Ryan whispered, his thumb lightly stroking her cheek. "I brought that monster into your life. I spent years trying to keep the peace, asking you to be patient with her, when I should have cut her off the day we got married."
Maya looked into his eyes, placing her hand over his. "You didn't know how far she would go, Ryan. No one expects their own mother to be capable of such evil. You saved us last night. You stood up to her when it mattered most."
"It shouldn't have taken my son losing his breath for me to wake up," Ryan said bitterly.
Before Maya could reply, Ryan's phone buzzed. It was a text message from Richard Vance containing a urgent alert:
WARNING: Evelyn’s legal team just filed an emergency ex-parte motion with the family court. They are alleging that you and Maya are fleeing the jurisdiction with Oliver. They’ve requested an immediate pickup order for the child.
Ryan’s blood ran cold. "She's not stopping. Even under house arrest, she's using the legal system to tear Oliver away from us."
Suddenly, the lights in the hotel suite flickered and died, plunging the room into total darkness.
The emergency backup generator didn't kick in.
"Ryan?" Maya's voice panicked in the dark. She immediately reached out, grabbing Oliver in her arms.
"Stay down," Ryan hissed, pulling a heavy metallic flashlight from his bag.
Down the hallway outside their suite, the heavy sound of approaching footsteps echoed on the carpet.
Ryan realized with terrifying clarity that Evelyn wasn't just relying on lawyers anymore. She was cornered, facing decades in prison, and a cornered predator is at its most dangerous.
The electronic door lock of their suite chimed—a low green light flashed as an unauthorized master keycard unlocked the door.
The heavy wooden door pushed open.
Standing in the doorway was a tall man in dark clothing, holding a heavy manila envelope in one hand and a silenced sidearm low at his side.
"Mr. Whitmore," the man said, his voice flat and calm. "Mrs. Whitmore sent me to deliver a final set of settlement papers. You sign them, hand over the boy, and your wife walks away uninjured."
Ryan stepped in front of Maya and Oliver, shielding them completely with his body. He shone the blinding beam of the tactical flashlight directly into the intruder's eyes.

"You picked the wrong room," Ryan said grimly.
Before the intruder could adjust his aim, Ryan lunged forward, slamming his full body weight into the man.
