Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Siege

By noon, the news landscape began to shift.
While Evelyn's PR machine was busily pitching stories of her "tragic survival" to mainstream media outlets, Richard Vance delivered a copy of the encrypted files to the state prosecutor's office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
However, legal proceedings took time, and time was something Ryan didn't have. Evelyn had called an emergency meeting of the Whitmore Enterprises Board of Directors for 3:00 PM at the corporate headquarters downtown. Her objective was clear: formally oust Ryan from the company, strip his voting shares under an "incapacity and moral turpitude" clause, and cement her absolute authority over the multi-billion-dollar empire.
At 2:45 PM, a black town car pulled up to the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Whitmore Enterprises.
Evelyn Whitmore stepped out, surrounded by four bodyguards and Arthur Sterling. She wore a tailored burgundy suit, her silver-blond hair swept back in a flawless chignon. She looked imperious, untouched by the storm brewing around her. A swarm of reporters pushed forward, flashing cameras in her face.
"Mrs. Whitmore! Is it true your daughter-in-law attacked you?" "Mrs. Whitmore, what is the condition of your grandson?"
Evelyn stopped briefly, offering a tragic, graceful smile for the cameras. "My grandson is recovering, thank you. It is a deeply painful private family matter, but I am doing everything in my power to protect my family from further instability."
She walked into the marble lobby, her heels clicking authoritatively against the floor.
Upstairs on the 40th floor, the executive boardroom was packed. Twelve of the most powerful corporate directors in the country sat around an oval mahogany table.
Evelyn took her place at the head of the table. Arthur Sterling stood beside her, opening a leather binder containing the legal resolution to strip Ryan of his corporate power.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Evelyn began, her voice smooth as silk. "Thank you for convening on such short notice. As you are aware, my son, Ryan, has recently fallen under the dangerous influence of an emotionally unstable individual. Last night, an incident occurred that put my grandson's life in danger. Unfortunately, Ryan’s judgment has been severely compromised."
Arthur smoothed his tie. "Under Article 4, Section 8 of the corporate charter, the board has the authority to vote on the immediate suspension of voting rights for any member deemed mentally unfit or involved in active litigation that poses a reputational hazard to the firm."
"Let us proceed directly to the vote," Evelyn said, looking around the room with supreme confidence. "All those in favor—"
BANG.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open, slamming against the walls.
Ryan Whitmore walked into the room. He wasn't wearing his usual tailor-made suit. He wore a simple dark jacket and jeans. His face was set like concrete, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding light.
Behind him walked Detective Marcus Vance and two armed federal agents.
"Ryan?" Evelyn’s eyes narrowed, though her composure barely flickered. "This is a private corporate meeting. You have been placed on administrative leave. Security, escort him out."
"Security isn't going to touch me, Evelyn," Ryan said, stepping up to the foot of the table. He threw a stack of printed documents directly into the center of the mahogany table. "Because the federal government just froze every corporate account associated with Whitmore Enterprises."
Gasps echoed across the boardroom. The board members scrambled to pick up the documents.
"What is the meaning of this insolence?" Arthur yelled, stepping forward. "You have no standing here!"
"Read the papers, Arthur," Ryan said cold. "Or better yet, ask my mother about Project Lily."
Evelyn’s face drained of color so fast it was as if she had been struck. Her hands visibly trembled under the table, though she tried to keep her chin up. "You... you have no idea what you are talking about."
"Thirty years ago, you covered up the cause of my sister's death to protect your political and social status," Ryan said, his voice echoing clearly throughout the vast room. "You bribed medical examiners. You falsified corporate tax filings to pay off blackmailers for three decades. And last night, you put hidden cameras in my home, physically assaulted my wife, hid my son's emergency inhaler, and left him to choke so you could steal custody!"
"That is a lie!" Evelyn shouted, breaking her poised facade for the first time. Her voice pitched into a shrill, manic screech. "He is insane! He’s trying to destroy me just like his father did!"
"We have the audio recordings, Evelyn," Detective Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "We have the original server logs from the hidden camera system you installed in the nursery. And twenty minutes ago, our forensic team found Oliver's inhaler in the bushes outside the nursery window—with your fingerprints wiped, but your silver bracelet's unique metal residue transfer left on the plastic casing."
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Directors stood up, shouting demands for answers.
"Evelyn, is this true?" senior board member Marcus Thorne demanded, looking horrified. "Is the company involved in federal wire fraud and bribery?"
"I built this company!" Evelyn screamed, standing up and slamming her hands on the table. "None of you would have anything without me! Ryan, you ungrateful little brat! I gave you everything! I made you!"
"You didn't make me," Ryan said quietly, standing tall as the federal agents stepped behind Evelyn. "You just spent my whole life trying to break me. But it's over now."
"Evelyn Whitmore," Detective Vance said, stepping behind her and grabbing her wrists. "You are under arrest for felony child endangerment, obstruction of justice, unlawful surveillance, and corporate fraud. You have the right to remain silent."

As the handcuffs clicked shut around her delicate wrists, Evelyn glared at Ryan with pure hatred. "You will rot in hell for this, Ryan! You will lose everything! You'll be nothing without the Whitmore name!"
"I don't care about the name," Ryan said, watching as they led her out of the room past her stunned colleagues. "I have my family."
