Chapter 3 - The Crack in the Porcelain

"Our partnership is dead, Victoria," Julian said, stepping in front of Elena to shield her from the older woman's icy glare. "And honestly, you should be much more worried about your future than any business contract."
Victoria’s face hardened, the mask of high-society elegance completely slipping away. "Are you threatening me in my own home, Julian? Over a common maid? She signed a contract. She belongs to this house until her debt is paid. What happens under this roof is my business."
"We'll see what the court of public opinion has to say about that," Julian countered. He took Elena by the hand, his grip warm and reassuring. "Come on, Elena. We're leaving."
"She isn't going anywhere!" Victoria hissed, stepping forward to block the exit. "Elena, if you walk out that door, I will file charges for breach of contract. I will ensure your father's medical coverage is canceled by tomorrow morning. You will be penniless, blacklisted, and threw into a cell."
Elena trembled, the threat hitting her hardest where it hurt—her father. Her father was undergoing dialysis, and Victoria’s company paid for his treatment as part of Elena’s indentured service. If that support vanished, her father would die within weeks.
Julian looked at Elena, sensing her sudden terror. "Elena, look at me. I will take care of your father. I will pay for his treatment, his doctors, everything. You don't have to be her prisoner anymore."
Looking into Julian’s sincere, protective eyes, something shifted inside Elena. The fear that had kept her paralyzed for two years began to melt into a quiet, burning resolve. She looked at Victoria, standing tall and proud, and for the first time, Elena did not lower her head.
"I quit," Elena said, her voice clear and resonant.
Victoria's eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "You ungrateful little pest—"
Before Victoria could react, Julian led Elena out of the kitchen and through the back exit into the cool night air. They got into his sleek black SUV and drove away, leaving the grand Sterling mansion shrinking in the rearview mirror.
But Victoria Sterling was not a woman who accepted defeat.
Back in the mansion, Victoria paced the floor of her study, her breathing shallow and angry. She picked up her phone and dialed a private number.

"Marcus," Victoria said when the call connected. "The maid has escaped with Julian Vance. They have some sort of recording. I need you to handle this immediately. Frame her. Say she stole the family diamonds before she fled. Put out an active warrant for her arrest. And make sure the press knows Julian Vance is harboring a criminal."
A cruel smile crept back onto Victoria's face as she hung up. "You think you can play hero, Julian? I will burn both of you to the ground."
