Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

Elena stared at Julian in absolute shock. In her two years of working for the wealthy elites of the city, no guest had ever looked at her with anything resembling humanity, let alone offered to help her.

"Mr. Vance, please... you shouldn't be here," Elena stammered, stepping backward. "If Mrs. Sterling sees you—"

"Let her see," Julian said firmly. He walked over to the stainless-steel prep table and opened the first-aid kit, pulling out a tube of burn ointment and clean gauze. "Sit down, Elena. That soup was boiling. You need to treat those burns before they infection sets in."

Seeing the hesitation in her eyes, Julian’s expression softened. "I’m not going to let her hurt you anymore. But first, we need to take care of you."

Reluctantly, Elena sat on the edge of a wooden stool. As Julian gently applied the soothing cream to the reddened skin on her neck and collarbone, Elena couldn't help but let a few tears slip down her cheeks.

"Why are you helping me?" she whispered. "To people like the Sterlings, I’m just property. Why do you care?"

"Because I used to be you," Julian replied quietly, his hands steady as he wrapped the clean gauze. "My mother worked three jobs as a cleaning lady just to put food on our table. I watched people treat her like dirt for eighteen years. I swore to myself that if I ever gained power, I would never let people like Victoria Sterling get away with it."

He looked into her eyes, his gaze intense and unwavering. "This isn't just about tonight, Elena. Victoria has a history. I've been doing some research on her company, Sterling Imports. They’ve been using under-the-table labor contracts, withholding passports, and abusing domestic staff for years. I wanted to see it with my own eyes before I took action. Tonight, she gave me all the proof I needed."

Elena’s heart raced. "Proof? But there are no cameras in the dining room."

Julian smiled faintly, pointing to the lapel of his discarded suit jacket, which was visible through the kitchen door. "A pinhole camera. I record all my business meetings for legal security. I captured the entire incident, from the moment she picked up the bowl to the moment she threw it at you."

Elena gasped. "If Victoria finds out, she will destroy you. She has the police, the media, and the judges in her pocket."

"Let her try," Julian said, his eyes darkening with determination. "But to bring her down completely, I need your help, Elena. I need your courage. Are you willing to fight back?"

Before Elena could answer, the heavy oak door to the kitchen creaked open. The sharp, rhythmic clicking of high heels echoed on the linoleum floor.

Victoria Sterling stepped into the room, her eyes narrowing as she saw Julian standing close to Elena, holding the medical gauze.

"Julian," Victoria said, her voice dripping with false sweetness that couldn't hide the underlying threat. "I didn't realize you had such an... eclectic interest in the household staff. I suggest you step away from her. We have a contract to discuss, and I would hate for a minor distraction to ruin our partnership."
