Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

The door shuddered under the weight of his frantic strikes. A crack appeared in the elegant frosted glass panel, revealing the shadow of his distorted, enraged face on the other side.

I held Leo and Evelyn tight against my chest, my body acting as a shield, my heart hammering like a trapped bird. But I didn't cry. I didn't beg. The helpless maid he had abused was dead; in her place stood the architect who had planned his ruin.

"Adrian," I called out, my voice deadly calm, echoing in the small, tiled space of the bathroom. "Every camera in this hallway is streaming directly to the police department. The backup generators are independent. You have exactly two minutes before the SWAT team enters this room."

"I don't care!" he shrieked, slamming a heavy iron crowbar through the glass panel, showering the floor with sharp, glittering shards. He reached his hand through the gap, fumbling frantically for the lock. "I will burn this entire city down before I let you win!"

His fingers caught the edge of the deadbolt.

"Stop right there, Morrison!"

Marcus’s voice boomed from the bedroom, followed by the sound of a heavy scuffle.

Adrian let out a guttural, animalistic roar as he was tackled to the floor. The sound of fists meeting flesh, the clatter of the iron crowbar against the tile, and the desperate, breathless cursing of two men fighting in the dark echoed through the suite.

I pressed my back against the far wall of the bathroom, keeping my body over the babies, praying that Marcus could hold him off.

A final, heavy thud shook the floorboards.

"Clear!" Marcus gasped, his voice ragged.

The emergency lights of the apartment suddenly flickered back to full, warm white power. The bathroom door was pushed open, revealing Marcus standing over a bloodied, panting Adrian, who was pinned securely to the floor in heavy steel handcuffs.

Behind Marcus, half a dozen armed police officers poured into the room, their weapons drawn, their tactical gear glistening in the light.

The district attorney, who had personally authorized the emergency warrant, stepped into the room, looking down at Adrian with utter disgust. "Adrian Morrison, you are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated burglary, domestic assault, and multiple counts of federal financial fraud. Take him away."

As the officers dragged Adrian out of the room, his face bruised and his eyes wide with the realization of his permanent defeat, he looked at me. I stood tall, holding my twins, looking down at him from the doorway of the bathroom with the same deadpan, unyielding gaze he had tried so hard to destroy.

He opened his mouth to scream one last curse, but the elevator doors slid shut, silencing him forever.
