Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Morrison

For three agonizing seconds, Adrian didn't move. He stood there, his brain desperately trying to calculate a reality that defied his entire worldview. To him, I was the quiet, dutiful heiress he had married for her family's social standing—a woman he could isolate, abuse, and manipulate while he rebuilt his empire on my family's ruins.

"You're lying," Vanessa sneered, stepping forward, though the trembling of her champagne glass betrayed her terror. "You're a housewife, Mara. You don't know the first thing about venture capital."

"I have a master's degree in corporate law from Yale, Vanessa," I said quietly, never taking my eyes off Adrian. "While you were helping my husband hide his embezzlement, I was buying his debt through shell corporations. Every time Adrian took a high-interest loan to fund his lavish lifestyle, he was borrowing from me. Every time he leveraged a Morrison asset, he handed me another piece of his collar."

"Mara... please," Adrian stammered, stepping toward me, his hands raising in a pathetic gesture of negotiation. The arrogant monster of five minutes ago was gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered animal. "We can talk about this. We're a family. Think about the babies—"

"Do not speak about my children," I hissed, the sheer force of my anger making him flinch. "You kicked me while I was carrying them. You dragged me across the floor. You are not their father. You are just a debtor whose time has run out."

Downstairs, the music stopped completely.

The sound of shouting, heavy footsteps, and the systemic panic of seventy wealthy socialites fleeing a sinking ship echoed up the grand staircase. Two men in dark, identical suits stepped into the doorway of the bedroom, bypassing Charles Vance and Vanessa without a glance. They were my private security detail, led by Marcus, a former federal marshal I had hired six months ago to ensure my survival.

"Mrs. Morrison," Marcus said, his voice deep and reassuring as he stepped in front of me, shielding me from Adrian. "The paramedics are waiting for you at the private entrance. The transport is ready."

"Get them out of my house, Marcus," I said, leaning heavily on his arm as he helped me stand. The pain in my abdomen was worsening, a rhythmic, tightening pressure that told me the twins were ready to fight their way into the world.

"This is my house!" Adrian screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria as he tried to push past Marcus. "I built this! You can't do this to me!"

"Actually, Mr. Morrison," Marcus said, producing a legal document from his jacket pocket and placing it flat on the bed. "This is an emergency eviction notice. Your personal assets, including your clothing and vehicles, have been seized to satisfy the outstanding margin debt of Apex Holdings. You have exactly ten minutes to vacate the premises before the police arrive to arrest you for criminal trespassing."

Vanessa dropped her champagne glass. It shattered against the polished oak floor, the sparkling liquid mixing with the dust and my spilled blood. Without a word to Adrian, she turned on her designer heels and fled into the hallway, desperate to distance herself from the radioactive ruin of his name.

I looked at Adrian one last time as Marcus guided me toward the private elevator. He was on his knees, staring at the legal papers, his fingers clawing at the oak floorboards he had just dragged me across.

"Hold on," I whispered to my belly, closing my eyes as the elevator doors shut on his screams. "Just hold on."
