Chapter 3 - The Cornered Beasts Strike Back

Within three hours, the video of my graduation speech had exploded across social media.

A student had recorded the entire fifteen-minute confrontation and uploaded it to TikTok and Facebook. By the time I reached the off-campus studio apartment I shared with two roommates, the hashtag #TheSlapThatEchoed was trending worldwide.

The internet was furious. Commenters were demanding the immediate arrest of my father for physical assault, calling for an audit of Bennett Tech, and organizing boycots of their products.

My phone was ringing off the hook.

Unknown Number (24 missed calls)

Mother (45 missed calls, 12 text messages alternating between "Please call me, sweetheart" and "You are an ungrateful monster")

Father (3 missed calls, 1 voicemail)

I sat on my small, second-hand mattress and played the single voicemail from my father. His voice was no longer shouting. It was cold. Calculating. Dead.

Richard's Voicemail: "You think you've won, Emily? You've embarrassed us, yes. But you've also destroyed your own name. No tech firm will ever hire a whistleblower who publicly crucifies her own family. You are toxic asset now. Furthermore, if those files are leaked to the press, I will tie you up in litigation for the next thirty years. I have the best lawyers in the state. You have nothing. Come home, sign the NDA, and we will make this go away. You have twenty-four hours."

A cold chill ran down my spine. He was right about one thing: he had millions of dollars to burn on legal fees. I had exactly $450 in my savings account.

Suddenly, there was a sharp knock on my apartment door.

My heart leapt into my throat. Had he sent his corporate security team to retrieve the flash drive? I grabbed a heavy metal water bottle from my desk, holding it like a weapon as I approached the door.

"Who is it?" I called out, my voice trembling.

"Emily? It’s Caroline Hughes."

I gasped and quickly unlocked the door. Standing in the hallway was the dean of the university, still wearing her professional blazer, accompanied by a tall, elegant woman in a sharp navy blue pantsuit.

"Professor Hughes," I breathed, lowering the water bottle. "What are you doing here?"

"May we come in?" she asked gently.

I stepped aside, embarrassed by the tiny, cluttered state of my apartment. Professor Hughes smiled warmly, dismissing my unspoken anxiety with a wave of her hand.

"Emily, this is Victoria Vance," Professor Hughes said, introducing the woman beside her. "She is the senior managing partner at Vance & Associates, and one of the most formidable white-collar defense attorneys in the country. She also happens to be a very proud alumna of our university."

Victoria stepped forward and shook my hand. Her grip was firm, her eyes sharp and intelligent. "I saw the live stream of your graduation, Emily. And then I saw the viral videos. What your family did to you is not just morally abhorrent; it is highly illegal."

"My father is threatening to sue me into oblivion," I said, sitting down at my desk. "He says no one will hire me."

Victoria laughed, a rich, confident sound. "Your father is terrified, darling. He's bluffing because his entire empire is built on a foundation of sand. I spent the last two hours reviewing the financial public filings of Bennett Tech. The neural network model you designed? They've already listed it as a core asset in their upcoming Series C funding round. They've valued it at eighty million dollars."

She leaned in, placing a folder on my desk.

"If we can prove that intellectual property was stolen from you—which your audio recordings clearly do—Bennett Tech's valuation will drop to zero overnight. Investors will pull out, the SEC will launch an investigation for investor fraud, and your father will face criminal charges."

"But I can't afford your retainer, Ms. Vance," I whispered, looking down at my hands.

"I don't want your money, Emily," Victoria said softly, her expression softening with genuine empathy. "I was a scholarship student once. I know what it’s like to fight for every inch of ground you stand on. I am taking your case pro bono. We are going to destroy them."
