Chapter 2 - Unmasking the Monsters

The courtyard erupted into utter chaos.

Parents were standing up on chairs. Photographers, who had been hired to take standard graduation portraits, were now frantically snapping photos of my parents' horrified faces. The flashbulbs were blinding, reflecting off the tears of rage streaming down my mother's cheeks.

"Turn it off! Turn it off right now!" Richard bellowed, his voice cracking as he lunged toward the stage stairs.

But Professor Hughes didn't budge. She stood at the top of the steps, her arms crossed, her expression hardened like granite. "Mr. Bennett, you claimed your daughter was a fraud. It seems she is simply presenting her defense. Please remain where you are, or security will detain you for physical assault."

"She recorded us in our own home! That's illegal!" Ethan yelled, his eyes darting around the crowd as he realized his classmates were looking at him with disgust. The "golden boy" of the campus, the popular fraternity president who had cruised through his classes on the back of ghostwriters and family donations, was suddenly naked before the world.

"Actually, Ethan, it’s not," I replied, leaning closer to the microphone. "Under state law, only one party needs to consent to an audio recording. And since I was a participant in every single one of these conversations, they are entirely admissible in court."

I clicked on the next file.

This one was a video. It was captured by a hidden nanny cam I had installed in my old bedroom after my father threatened to burn my textbooks if I didn't drop out of the honors program to work full-time at his company.

The video played on the giant screens.

It showed my mother, Eleanor, systematically tearing through my room. She threw my clothes out of the closet, smashed a ceramic jewelry box—the last gift from my grandmother—and ripped up my handwritten study guides. All the while, Ethan stood by the doorway, laughing and recording it on his phone.

Eleanor's Voice (Video): "You think you're better than us? You think you're going to leave this house and become some big-shot engineer while your brother struggles? You are nothing, Emily. We gave you life, and we can take your future away in a heartbeat."

The crowd's reaction was no longer just gossip; it was pure, unadulterated fury. Several mothers in the audience were openly crying, horrified by the cruelty displayed on screen. Group of students in my department began chanting, "Let her speak! Let her speak!"

"For twenty-two years," I said, my eyes burning but my tears refusing to fall, "I was told that my sole purpose in life was to be a stepping stone for my brother. When I succeeded, my achievements were stolen and rebranded under his name. When I failed, I was beaten, humiliated, and locked away so as not to embarrass the family brand."

I looked down at my father.

"You slapped me today because you thought you could break me one last time before I walked out of your reach. You thought that by humiliating me in public, I would shrink away, beg for your forgiveness, and sign over my patents just to make the nightmare stop."

I picked up my diploma from the podium, holding it high in the air.

"But you underestimated me. I worked two jobs to pay for this. I starved to buy the textbooks you tore up. I walked miles in the rain when you took away my car because I got an A+ on an exam that Ethan failed. This diploma isn't a piece of paper. It is my freedom."

"Emily, please," my mother suddenly sobbed, falling to her knees in a display of dramatic desperation. "We are your parents! We love you! We did everything for you!"

"You did everything to me," I corrected her. "And now, the world is going to see what happens when the scapegoat fights back."

With those final words, I pulled the flash drive from the port. I looked at Professor Hughes, who gave me a solemn, deeply respectful nod.

As I walked down the stage steps, the crowd didn't whisper anymore. They parted for me like the Red Sea. But they didn't step away in fear of scandal.

They stepped away in absolute awe.
