Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Vipers

By noon, the grand lobby of the Five-Star Grand Horizon Hotel was buzzing with whispers.

Damian, Evelyn, and a highly frantic Vanessa sat huddled around a small circular table in the corner of the hotel lounge. They looked entirely out of place among the wealthy patrons. Damian’s suit was wrinkled, his tie missing. Evelyn’s pristine hair was a messy nest, and Vanessa was weeping silently into a handkerchief, her phone flashing with hundreds of notifications from angry suppliers demanding payments for her ruined fashion label.

"This can't be happening," Vanessa whispered, her voice cracked with despair. "My boutique... my factory in Milan... they shut it down in three hours! They said the leaseholder revoked the manufacturing license! Damian, you said you were going to protect me! You said your wife was a nobody!"

"She is a nobody!" Evelyn hissed, though her hands were shaking so badly she could barely hold her teacup. "She’s a common girl from the eastern district! Her father is a retired contractor! I saw his old truck once when he dropped her off! This must be the work of a rival logistics firm! They’re using Isabella to get to us!"

"Shut up! Both of you, shut up!" Damian slammed his fist on the table, causing the crystal sugar bowl to rattle. His eyes were wide with a manic, desperate energy. "I’ve been tracking the corporate filings of the company that pulled the twenty million dollars. The parent company isn't a rival logistics firm. It's Montrose Global."

"Montrose Global?" Evelyn gasped, the name sending a shiver down her spine. "The sovereign wealth family? The ones who own half the shipping docks in the country? Why would they care about our small firm?"

Before Damian could answer, the large double doors of the hotel lounge opened wide. The entire room fell into a sudden, respectful silence as a dozen security guards in tailored charcoal suits formed a perfect protective corridor from the entrance to the center of the room.

Walking down the corridor was Isabella.

She looked breathtaking. A double-breasted white wool coat draped over her shoulders, an exquisite diamond necklace—a genuine Montrose heirloom—glittering beneath the hotel’s crystal lights. Her posture was that of a queen inspecting her subjects. Behind her walked her father, Arthur, and a team of forty lawyers and corporate executives.

Damian’s jaw dropped. He stood up so fast his chair fell backward, clattering against the carpet. "Isabella? What... what are you doing dressed like that? How did you get in here with these people?"

Isabella stopped five feet from their table. She didn't look at Vanessa, nor did she look at Evelyn, who had suddenly shrunk back into her seat. Her eyes locked entirely onto Damian, cold and sharp as shards of ice.

"I told you last night, Damian," Isabella said, her voice clear and resonant, echoing through the silent lounge. "Every dollar your family worships... every luxury you claimed as your own... they existed because I allowed them to. You thought you rescued a poor girl. You never realized I was the only daughter of Arthur Montrose."

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Evelyn dropped her teacup. It shattered on the carpet, the brown liquid staining her designer shoes. "No... no, that’s impossible. You’re Isabella Thorne... your last name—"

"Thorne is my mother’s maiden name," Isabella said coldly, tilting her chin up. "I used it because I wanted to find a man who loved me for who I was, not for my family's balance sheet. I gave you four years, Evelyn. Four years of listening to you call me a beggar at your table. Four years of watching my husband use my family's money to buy diamonds for his mistress."

Damian took a trembling step forward, his face completely pale, his hands outstretched in a desperate plea. "Isabella... Bella, sweetheart... please. It was a mistake! The slap... I was stressed! The business pressure was making me crazy! Vanessa... she seduced me, I swear! She lied about the necklace to drive us apart! You know I love you!"

Vanessa gasped, looking up at Damian with horror. "Damian! How dare you! You told me you hated her! You told me she was a burden!"

Isabella let out a soft, beautiful laugh that carried absolutely zero warmth. "Save your breath, Damian. The time for talking ended the moment your hand touched my face. By the order of the Montrose Global Board, Cross Logistics has been declared technically insolvent as of ten minutes ago. We have initiated a total asset seizure to recover our loans."

"You can't do this!" Damian yelled, his desperation turning into an ugly, panicked rage. "I built that company with my own blood and sweat! You can't just take it from me!"

"I didn't take it from you, Damian," Isabella said, turning her back on him as her security detail moved in to block any further movement from the Cross family. "You threw it away the moment you forgot who built the foundation you were standing on."
