Chapter 2 - The Sunrise Avalanche

The morning sun did not bring warmth to the city; instead, it cast a harsh, unforgiving light over the soaring glass tower of Montrose Global Headquarters.

Isabella stood in the center of the panoramic boardroom on the 80th floor, dressed no longer in the modest, faded dresses her husband insisted she wear, but in a bespoke navy-blue power suit that accentuated her sharp, commanding posture. Her long dark hair was pulled back into a flawless, elegant bun. Standing behind her were twelve senior partners from the city’s most formidable legal and financial institutions, all holding leather-bound folders stamped with the gold Montrose crest.

Sitting at the head of the massive obsidian conference table was her father, Arthur Montrose—a man whose nod could shift the value of national currencies. His eyes were fixed on his daughter, filled with a deep, silent pride, mixed with a father's protective anger.

"You bore their insults for four years, Isabella," Arthur said, his deep voice vibrating through the room. "You allowed them to believe you were a nobody. Why?"

"Because I wanted to know if Damian loved the girl from the ordinary neighborhood, Father," Isabella replied calmly, her gaze fixed on the digital ticker on the wall showing Cross Logistics stock plummeting by forty percent in pre-market trading. "I wanted to give him every chance to be a real husband. But last night, he showed me exactly what he is. He is a parasite who mistakes the host's blood for his own strength."

She turned to the lead legal counsel. "Arthur, what is the status of the Cross family assets?"

"As of 6:00 AM, Ms. Montrose, the bank foreclosure notices have been served directly to Damian Cross's personal residence," the lawyer replied, opening a document. "Every luxury vehicle registered under his company has been repossessed. The secondary investment accounts held by his mother, Evelyn Cross, have been liquidated to cover the sudden margin calls on their failed logistics bonds. Technically speaking, they are currently surviving on whatever cash they have in their wallets."

Isabella let out a cold, breathy laugh. "Let’s see how long Evelyn’s aristocratic accent lasts when she has to pay for her own groceries. What about the mistress, Vanessa Hale?"

"Vanessa Hale's fashion brand, Scarlet Designs, was entirely funded by a subsidiary company owned by Montrose Global," the lawyer continued with a slight smirk. "We have pulled the manufacturing leases in Europe and Asia. Her upcoming collection at Fashion Week has been canceled due to non-payment of venue fees. She is currently ruined."

Meanwhile, inside the Cross mansion, the morning had turned into a literal nightmare.

Damian had spent the last five hours locked in his study, frantically dialing every contact in his phone book. Investors who used to beg for his time were suddenly unavailable. Bankers who used to laugh at his jokes hung up the phone the moment he mentioned a short-term loan.

The front doors of the mansion were suddenly slammed open. Evelyn Cross came rushing into the study, her expensive silk robe disheveled, her face pale with absolute terror.

"Damian! Damian, look outside!" she shrieked, her voice shaking so hard she could barely form the words. "There are moving trucks at the gate! Men in uniforms are putting yellow tape around the driveway! They say the house is being seized!"

Before Damian could answer, the double doors of the study were pushed open by two large security guards wearing black suits with the gold Montrose emblem on their lapels. Behind them stepped Christian, holding a formal eviction notice.

"What the hell is the meaning of this?" Damian roared, rising from his chair, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. "Get out of my house before I have you arrested for trespassing! Do you know who I am? I am Damian Cross!"

"Actually, Mr. Cross, you are an evicted tenant," Christian said with a cold, professional smile, tossing the legal document onto the desk. "This property is owned by the Montrose Heritage Trust. Due to a material breach of the lease agreement—specifically, the illegal modification of the southern retaining wall and the sudden collapse of your corporate creditworthiness—your lease has been terminated effective immediately. You have thirty minutes to pack your personal belongings into standard boxes."

"This is a joke!" Evelyn screamed, running forward and grabbing Christian’s arm. "My family has lived here for four years! My grandfather's antiques are in the grand hall! You cannot throw us out! Where is that gold necklace? I’ll sell it! I’ll pay whatever you want!"

Christian gently but firmly brushed her hand off his suit jacket, his eyes darkening. "Your grandmother's necklace, Mrs. Cross? You mean the one your son’s mistress, Vanessa Hale, took from your jewelry box yesterday afternoon to ensure Isabella would be framed? The police have already recovered it from Ms. Hale’s apartment during her bankruptcy asset sweep. She has confessed to everything."

Damian felt the room spin. He looked at Christian, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper. "Vanessa... Vanessa framed her? Why? Why are you doing this? Who is backing you? Is it an investor? Who has the power to do this to me in a single night?"

May you like

Christian walked to the door, stopping just before he left. He looked back at Damian with a look of pure, unadulterated pity.

"You told your wife last night that she could only ask for forgiveness on her knees, Mr. Cross. You told her this empire existed because you allowed it to. You should have checked the name on the corporate parent registry before you raised your hand. Your wife didn't marry into your world, Damian. You were just an ant living in hers."
