Chapter 8 - The Return of the Dead

The world around me completely dissolved.
The falling snow, the wailing police sirens, the groaning mercenaries scattered across the courtyard—none of it mattered anymore.
My eyes locked onto the woman walking steadily through the snow toward the terrace.
She wore a long black wool coat, her dark hair pulled back in a severe bun, her face pale and lined with the heavy weight of three years spent running from ghosts. But there was no mistaking the sharp, fierce determination in those familiar eyes.
It was Isabella.
She stopped ten feet away from me, her chest heaving as she looked from my face down to Salvatore, who was groaning in the snow beneath the barrel of my gun, and finally over to Lily, who had just scrambled up from the snowdrifts.
“Mommy?” Lily whispered, her blue eyes wide with absolute wonder as she stared at the woman she had only known from old photographs.
Isabella’s composure instantly shattered. Tears flooded her eyes, and she dropped to her knees in the snow, opening her arms wide.
“My baby,” Isabella choked out, her voice breaking as Lily ran across the courtyard and threw herself straight into her mother’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably into her coat.
I stood frozen over Salvatore, my rifle still leveled at his head, my mind struggling to process the impossible reality unfolding right in front of me.
Isabella looked up at me over Lily’s shoulder. Her eyes were swimming with unshed tears, filled with a deep, aching apology.
“Alessandro,” she whispered softly.
“You’re dead,” I managed to choke out, the words tasting like dry sand in my mouth. “I buried you. I identified the ring in the wreckage. I spent three years burning the world down because I thought some rival faction took you from me.”
“I had to make them believe I was dead, Alessandro,” Isabella said, her voice shaking as she gently stroked Lily’s hair, keeping the little girl shielded against her chest. “My father’s syndicate had infiltrated every level of local law enforcement. The only way to keep you—and our unborn child—safe from Uncle Salvatore was to disappear into the witness protection network under a classified federal directive.”
“Federal directive?” I repeated bitterly, stepping closer, my voice rising with a dangerous, pent-up fury. “You let me grieve? You let me turn my heart into stone? You let me raise our daughter in a world of blood and enemies while you hid in a Swiss vault?!”
“I didn't just hide!” Isabella shouted back, standing up slowly, holding Lily securely in her arms. Her voice carried a steel core that proved she was every bit a Vance. “I spent the last three years building an airtight federal RICO case against my uncle and every single corrupt politician on his payroll! I couldn't come back to you, Alessandro, because one of your own inner circle capos was feeding our logistics straight to Salvatore. If I had returned to New York openly, Salvatore would have executed you and both our daughters within twenty-four hours!”
The blood froze in my veins.
One of my own inner circle capos.
Elena’s words from the master suite echoed sharply in my mind.
Before I could ask who the traitor was, heavy footsteps crunched through the snow behind me.
I spun around instantly, raising my sidearm out of pure instinct.
Standing at the edge of the terrace, flanked by four armed syndicate enforcers with their weapons drawn and pointed straight at Isabella and Lily, was Marco.
My right-hand man. My brother in arms.
May you like
The man I had trusted with my life a thousand times over.
And in his hand, pointing a heavy Glock directly at my chest, was the ultimate betrayal.
