Chapter 5 - The War Room Ultimatum

The digital screen went black with a harsh electronic hiss.
For three seconds, the master suite was dead silent. The blizzard outside seemed to howl with renewed fury, battering against the reinforced glass windows as if trying to break into the room and join the nightmare unfolding inside.
Then, the beast inside me broke loose.
I didn't yell. I didn't curse. I simply reached down, drew my custom-engraved Sig Sauer from its holster, and slammed the magazine home with a sharp, metallic clack.
“Marco,” I said, my voice dropping into an arctic whisper that made even my most hardened lieutenant shudder. “Gather every man we have in the main house. Arm the basement armory. Tell the sniper team on the north turret to take out the mercenary holding the pistol to my daughter’s head the second they get a clear wind-adjusted shot.”
“Boss,” Marco cautioned, his eyes darting toward the security monitor. “Salvatore’s men are using high-end thermal scopes. If our sniper misses by a millimeter, the collateral damage is—”
“Our sniper won’t miss,” I interrupted, turning to face him with eyes burning with absolute homicide. “And if they do, I’ll plant a bullet between their eyes myself. Nobody touches my daughter. Nobody takes my house.”
On the bed, Elena struggled to push herself up, clutching her bruised ribs. “Alessandro, you can’t fight them head-on! Salvatore brought the V-Sec division—private military contractors trained in black ops. Your local syndicate enforcers will get slaughtered in an open firefight!”
“Then it’s a good thing I didn’t build my empire on local enforcers,” I retorted coldly.
I turned toward the hidden wall safe behind the mahogany bookshelf. I spun the heavy steel dial—three turns right, two turns left, one turn right—and pulled the heavy door open. Inside wasn't cash or smuggled diamonds. It was a secondary tactical command tablet linked directly to the private emergency bunkers buried fifty feet beneath the estate.
“Miller,” I called out to the guard stationed by the door.
“Sir!”
“Activate Protocol Zero. Flood the lower courtyard with the automated smoke barriers, lock down all perimeter blast doors, and release the hounds from the eastern kennels.”
Miller’s eyes widened in shock. “Protocol Zero, Boss? That’s scorched-earth. The property damage alone—”
“Do it!” I roared, slamming my fist against the console.
“Right away, Boss!” Miller bolted out of the room, his boots pounding frantically down the hallway.
I turned back to Elena, who was watching me with a mixture of terror and awe.
“You said Isabella faked her death,” I said, walking over and grabbing her by the shoulders, pulling her upright. “You said she went into hiding to protect our child. If what you’re telling me is true, where is she right now, Elena? Because if she’s alive, and she’s out there while my daughter is held at gunpoint in my courtyard, she better pray I find her before Salvatore does.”
Elena swallowed hard, her lips trembling. “She’s... she’s not in New York, Alessandro.”
“Where is she?!”
“She’s in Zurich,” Elena gasped out, tears spilling over. “She’s been guarding your other child—the one Salvatore doesn’t know exists—hidden inside the Swiss Federal vault network under a false identity. She didn’t run away to abandon you, Alessandro. She ran away because she intercepted an internal memo proving that one of your own closest inner circle capos was selling your shipping routes to Salvatore.”
The world stopped spinning a second time.
My grip on Elena’s shoulders slowly loosened. My mind raced back through every major betrayal, every botched shipment, every sudden ambush over the last three years.
“One of my own inner circle,” I whispered, the horrifying realization dawning on me like a tidal wave.
Before I could process the betrayal rotting inside my own syndicate, a deafening explosion rocked the southern wing of the mansion.
Boom!

The shockwave rattled the windows, sending glass raining across the master suite floor as alarms began to wail a deafening red alert throughout the estate.
Salvatore’s men had just initiated the breach.
