Chapter 5 - The Raid

At 6:00 AM on Thursday morning, three unmarked black SUVs pulled into the driveway of my childhood home, accompanied by two marked county sheriff cruisers.

I stood on the curb alongside Detective Ramirez as twelve armed state investigators clad in dark windbreakers with ATTORNEY GENERAL INVESTIGATIONS printed in bold gold letters across their backs assembled on the front lawn.

"We have execution warrants for all financial records, electronic devices, personal hard drives, and physical evidence related to the care of Chloe Carter," Ramirez announced through a bullhorn.

The front door flew open. Jonah rushed out onto the porch in his undershirt, his eyes wide with fury. "What the hell is this?! You can't be here! I have a lawyer!"

"We have a judge's signature, Jonah," I said, walking up the driveway with a team of evidence technicians. "Move aside, or you'll be charged with obstruction of justice on top of your federal wire fraud indictments."

State investigators pushed past him into the house.

Within minutes, the quiet residential street was filled with the sounds of drawers being pulled open, file cabinets being unlocked, and computer towers being disconnected.

My mother stood in the living room, weeping hysterically into a tissue as officers cataloged her designer handbags, expensive jewelry, and receipts from luxury spa weekends—all purchased with funds drawn directly from Chloe’s medical care accounts.

"Karina!" my mother screamed as an investigator placed a seal on her home computer. "How can you do this to your own mother?! I raised you! I gave you everything!"

I stopped in front of the fireplace, looking at a framed photograph of my father standing beside a ten-year-old Chloe, both of them laughing in the summer sun.

"Dad gave us love," I said quietly, turning to face her. "Dad spent his entire life making sure Chloe felt safe, valued, and strong. The day he died, you took his memory and sold it to a coward who beat his daughter for pocket money."

"I was lonely!" my mother sobbed, falling onto the sofa. "You don't know what it was like after your father died! Jonah was there for me!"

"Jonah was there for your inheritance and Chloe's disability checks," I corrected coldly. "And you traded your daughter's safety for his company."

An investigator walked out of the kitchen, holding a plastic evidence bag containing a bloody dishrag that Jonah had used in a desperate, failed attempt to clean the refrigerator door after the assault.

"We found human tissue remnants on the handle, Boss," the technician reported to me. "Matches the victim's DNA profile. He didn't even clean it properly."

Jonah was led out of the house in heavy steel handcuffs, his hands secured behind his back, his head bowed as news cameras from local stations broadcast his arrest live across the state.

As he was pushed into the back of the police cruiser, he glared at me through the open window. "You think you've won, Karina?! You're going to spend the rest of your life alone! Your mother will never forgive you!"

"I don't need her forgiveness, Jonah," I said, watching the cruiser door slam shut. "I have my sister back."
