Chapter 2 - The Hospital Wall

The fluorescent lights of the St. Jude Memorial Hospital ICU flickered overhead, casting a cold, sterile glare across the blue linoleum floor.
I sat beside Chloe’s bed, holding her small, trembling hand. Her face was almost unrecognizable. Black and purple bruising extended from her cheekbones down to her jaw, and a thick white surgical dressing covered the bridge of her shattered nose. Her forearm crutches leaned against the corner wall, silent witnesses to her stolen independence.
"Karina..." Chloe rasped, her voice thick from the pain medication. "Mom called me... she said if I press charges, they'll lose the house. She said Jonah will go to jail and she'll be left with nothing."
"Look at me, Chloe," I said gently, leaning over the bed rail so she could see my eyes clearly. "Look at me right now."
She turned her swollen eyes toward me, tears welling up and spilling over her bruised cheeks.
"Mom has made her choice," I said, my voice steady, unyielding. "She chose a monster over her own daughter. But I am making my choice too. You are never going back to that house. Not ever."
The door to the private room pushed open. Dr. Evans, the chief trauma surgeon on duty, walked in holding a clipboard and a series of digital X-ray printouts.
"Ms. Carter?" Dr. Evans asked, looking at me. "Are you the sister who works with the AG’s office?"
"I am," I said, standing up and showing my official badge. "How is she?"
Dr. Evans handed me the X-rays. "The facial trauma is consistent with high-velocity, direct blunt force. A knee or a boot. The nasal septum is crushed, and she has a micro-fracture on her left orbital socket. But that’s not what concerns me most, Ms. Carter."
My chest tightened. "What do you mean?"
Dr. Evans flipped to a second sheet of scans—a full-body skeletal survey taken upon admission. "We found evidence of multiple previous fractures in various stages of healing. Two cracked ribs on her right side from roughly six months ago. A hairline fracture in her wrist from three months ago. Both were documented in her medical records as 'accidental falls.'"
Chloe pulled her hand back slightly, letting out a small, terrified sob.
"He told me if I said anything... he'd stop driving me to my physical therapy," Chloe whispered, her body shaking under the thin hospital blanket. "He said Mom would put me in a state institution if I became too much trouble."
I felt a cold, sharp rage settle into my bones—a rage so pure it transformed into absolute, ruthless clarity.
"Dr. Evans," I said, handing the X-rays back. "I need you to seal these records under an emergency forensic hold. Do not release them to her legal guardian—my mother—under any circumstances. I am filing for emergency adult protective custody within the hour."
"Already done, Investigator Carter," Dr. Evans said grimly. "The police department tried to take a simple misdemeanor report earlier, but I told the responding officer this was a severe felony abuse case. He’s waiting outside in the hallway."

I turned back to Chloe, bending down to press a gentle kiss against her forehead, avoiding her bruised skin.
"Rest now, little sister," I whispered. "The storm is over for you. But for Jonah... it’s just beginning."
