Chapter 6 - The Light of the Truth

The summer sun was warm and bright, sparkling off the crystal-blue waters of the Pacific Ocean as Lila and I walked along the sandy beach near our new shared cottage.
The air was fresh, carrying the clean scent of saltwater and pine needles.
We had sold the old coastal estate, using the funds to pay off the remaining corporate debts and establish a permanent trust for the burn recovery foundation. The new cottage was small and cozy, with a large wooden deck where we spent our evenings talking, laughing, and rebuilding the sisterhood we had lost for ten long years.
"I got a letter from Dad today," Lila said, kicking a small seashell into the surf. "He’s doing well. He’s teaching a business class to the other inmates. He says he’s finally sleeping through the night."
"And Mother?" I asked gently.
"She’s... still struggling," Lila admitted, looking out at the horizon. "She still blames us for 'ruining her legacy.' But the therapist says she’s making progress. Maybe in a few years, we can visit her together."
"I’d like that," I said, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
We stopped at the edge of a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean, the cool wind whipping through our hair. I looked down at my hands, at the faint silver lines of scar tissue that would always be a part of me.
They were no longer the "monster" my sister had tried to make me hide. They were the bridge that had brought us out of the darkness and into the light.
"We did it, Nora," Lila whispered, resting her head against my shoulder. "We finally survived the fire."
May you like
"No, Lila," I said, turning to look at her with a bright, contented smile as the sun began to set, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and rose.
"We didn't just survive the fire. We rebuilt the world from its ashes."
