Chapter 5 - From the Ashes

A year later.

The grand ballroom of the Portland Marriott was filled with a completely different crowd than the one that had attended our disastrous eighteenth birthday party.

Tonight was the inaugural benefit gala for the Vance Burn Recovery Foundation. The room was decorated in warm, soft gold lights and green plants, symbolizing growth and renewal. The guests weren't influencers or shallow socialites; they were doctors, philanthropists, burn survivors, and their families.

I stood backstage, looking at my reflection in the mirror. I wore a beautiful, sleeveless emerald green gown. The deep V-neckline showed the scars on my chest and collarbone, but instead of hiding them with heavy makeup or a scarf, I had left them bare. They were no longer a source of shame; they were my medals of survival.

"You look beautiful, Nora," a soft voice said from the doorway.

I turned to see Lila standing there. She was wearing a simple, elegant navy blue dress with long sleeves. She had spent the last year working quietly behind the scenes at our foundation, managing the patient outreach program. She had refused to do any public relations or modeling, choosing instead to listen to the stories of the people we were trying to help.

"Thanks to you," I said, walking over and giving her a warm hug. "How are the donation tallies looking?"

"We’ve raised over three million dollars tonight alone," Lila said, her eyes shining with genuine pride. "And the new Vance Restoration cream has officially been approved by the European Union for clinical use in post-operative skin healing. We’re changing lives, Nora. Real lives."

"We are," I agreed, taking her hand.

"They’re ready for us on stage," Mr. Harrison said, peeking his head through the door with a bright smile. "The board of directors and the foundation representatives are waiting."

As Lila and I walked out onto the stage together, the entire ballroom rose to their feet, their applause deafening. There were no phones raised in mockery tonight. The only screens visible were those capturing our smiles as we stood side-by-side—the beautiful twin and the brave twin, no longer separated by a lie, but united by the truth.
