Chapter 3 - A Mother's Vow

Four weeks passed. Thanks to the state-of-the-art medical care and the peaceful environment of the private wing the Colonel had secured, Jonah and Elise were finally strong enough to be discharged from the NICU.

Callie stood in front of the mirror in her private suite, wearing the cream-colored wool coat. She looked healthier, the color returned to her cheeks, and her eyes shone with a fierce, maternal light. She was no longer the vulnerable woman Russell thought he could crush. She was a mother who had survived the fire.

"Are we ready, my darlings?" Callie whispered, looking down at the double stroller where Jonah and Elise lay, dressed in matching knitted outfits. They looked chubby, healthy, and incredibly beautiful.

"The car is waiting, Callie," Colonel Whitaker said, entering the room with a warm smile. "And I think you’ll like your new home."

Instead of going back to the cramped condo she had shared with Russell, the Colonel had purchased a breathtaking estate overlooking the Maine coastline. It was a sanctuary—fenced, guarded, and surrounded by beautiful, lush gardens.

As they drove through the secure gates of the estate, Callie felt a weight lift from her shoulders. She spent the next two months completely focused on her babies. She watched them smile for the first time, heard their tiny coos, and felt her heart heal day by day.

But while Callie was building a new life, Russell was sinking into the abyss.

He was living in a run-down motel on the outskirts of Portland, sharing a bathroom with strangers. Because of his viral infamy, no reputable firm would hire him. He was completely broke, surviving on the remaining cash he had hidden in a safe-deposit box, which was rapidly running out.

One afternoon, desperate and delusional, Russell decided he needed to see Callie. He believed that if he could just get her alone, away from her uncle, he could manipulate her. After all, she had loved him once. Surely she wouldn't want to see the father of her children live like a beggar.

Using his last few dollars, he hired a private investigator to find her new address.

The next morning, Russell stood outside the gates of the Whitaker estate. He looked disheveled, his expensive suit now wrinkled and stained, his hair unwashed. He watched through the iron gates as Callie sat on a blanket in the garden, laughing as she held Jonah, while a nanny gently rocked Elise nearby.

She looked stunning. She looked wealthy. She looked completely happy without him.

Rage and jealousy burned hot in Russell’s chest. He marched up to the security intercom and pressed it violently.

"Callie! Callie, let me in!" he yelled into the speaker. "You can't keep my kids from me! I have rights! Let me in, or I'll call the police!"

Inside the garden, Callie heard the muffled shouting from the gate. She didn't panic. She didn't cry. She calmly handed Jonah to the nanny and stood up, wrapping her cream wool coat tightly around herself.

"Take the babies inside, please," Callie said quietly.

She walked down the long driveway toward the gate, where Russell was frantically shaking the iron bars like a caged animal.
