Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Harlan

"Get out of my sight," Colonel Whitaker commanded, looking down at Russell with absolute disgust. "Before I have the police officers behind me arrest you for criminal harassment inside a restricted medical ward."

Tessa stared at Russell, who was now kneeling on the floor, looking completely broken. The illusion of the powerful, wealthy tycoon had shattered in a matter of seconds. Panic seizing her, she began backing away toward the door.

"Russ... Russ, do something!" she hissed, but when he didn't answer, she looked at the cream wool coat she was wearing. Fearing she would be targeted next, she frantically slipped the coat off her shoulders and threw it onto an empty chair. "I have nothing to do with his business! I was just his assistant!" she screamed, before turning and fleeing down the corridor, her high heels clicking frantically against the floor.

Russell looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "Callie... please. Talk to your uncle. We can negotiate. I’ll give you the condo back! I’ll give you half of everything!"

"You will give her everything because the court will strip you of it," Colonel Whitaker said coldly. "Guards, escort this trash out."

Two of the large men stepped forward, grabbing Russell by his arms and dragging him out of the NICU. His desperate cries for mercy faded down the hallway, leaving only the peaceful, rhythmic beeping of Jonah and Elise's heart monitors.

Once they were gone, Callie let out a ragged breath. The physical pain of her C-section combined with the intense emotional relief made her dizzy.

"Take it easy, sweetheart," Uncle Marcus said, gently sitting on the edge of her bed and adjusting her blankets. He picked up the cream wool coat Tessa had discarded, carefully brushing it off. "We have the best neonatologists in the country flying in as we speak. Jonah and Elise will have the finest care money can buy. And as for you, you will never have to worry about a single cent, a roof over your head, or that monster ever again."

"Thank you, Uncle Marcus," Callie wept, holding the coat close to her chest, her fingers tracing the hand-stitched initials of her babies. "I felt so alone."

"You are a Whitaker by blood, Callie. You are never alone," he promised.

Over the next three days, the tide began to turn. Under the care of the world-class medical team brought in by Colonel Whitaker, the twins began to stabilize. Elise’s breathing grew stronger, and Jonah’s oxygen levels reached normal parameters.

Meanwhile, a legal hurricane was devouring Russell’s life.

With his accounts frozen, Russell couldn't pay his high-priced attorneys. When his legal team realized the opponent was Whitaker Global—a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate with ties to the federal government—they promptly dropped him as a client.

To make matters worse, the news of Russell's actions in the NICU leaked. A nurse who had witnessed the entire event posted an anonymous account on Facebook, which quickly went viral. Within twenty-four hours, local news outlets picked up the story.

The headline “Local Developer Serves Divorce Papers to Recovering Wife in NICU Next to Premature Twins” was shared millions of times. The public backlash was immediate and brutal. Protesters gathered outside Harlan Development Corp’s headquarters, and the company's stock plummeted to zero.

Russell sat in his empty, cold condo—the utilities had been shut off due to the frozen accounts—staring at a bottle of cheap whiskey. His phone buzzed. It was a text from Tessa.

“Don't ever contact me again. The police are asking questions about the company car you let me drive. You ruined my life.”

Russell screamed, throwing the bottle against the wall, watching it shatter into a thousand pieces. He had wanted to strip Callie of everything. Instead, he had built his own gallows.
