Chapter 5 - The Council of Wolves

Three weeks later, in a heavily fortified conference room on the top floor of the Valente skyscraper in downtown Manhattan, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Seated around a massive mahogany table were the five remaining heads of the New York Commission—the ruthless elders who controlled the underground syndicates of the tri-state area. They sat in heavy leather chairs, smoking Cuban cigars, their faces carved from stone and cynicism.
At the head of the table sat Adrien Valente. He wore a crisp, charcoal-gray suit, his hair neatly combed, his expression entirely devoid of the lethal warmth he showed in the Queens nursery. Standing directly behind his right shoulder was Marco Duca, his hand resting casually inside his jacket.
“You called an emergency session, Adrien,” Salvatore Moretti’s older brother, Donato Moretti, rasped from across the table. Donato was a withered, hawk-nosed patriarch whose family had lost three elite operatives during the failed compound raid on Long Island. “And you claim it’s to announce the dissolution of the Valente syndicate. Are you out of your mind? Or are you finally admitting defeat after your little compound got breached?”
Adrien didn't flinch. He slowly intertwined his fingers on the table, leaning forward slightly.
“I’m not admitting defeat, Donato,” Adrien said, his voice calm, measured, and terrifyingly cold. “I am simply resigning.”
A murmur of disbelief and mocking laughter rippled around the table.
“Resigning?” another elder scoffed. “You don't retire from the Commission, Valente. You leave in a pine box.”
“Try me,” Adrien said softly. The sheer weight of his quiet confidence cut through the laughter like a razor blade. He opened a heavy leather folder in front of him and slid copies across the table to each man. “Before you make any rash assumptions, look at the files.”
Donato picked up the documents, his cynical sneer slowly fading as his eyes scanned the pages. Inside were detailed financial audits, encrypted offshore communication logs, federal indictment dossiers, and unassailable proof of every illegal asset, bribery ring, and money-laundering scheme operated by the Moretti and rival families over the past two decades.
“What... what is this?” Donato stammered, his face turning pale.
“That is a complete, unredacted data package currently sitting on the desk of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Organized Crime Task Force,” Adrien said smoothly. “It contains every transaction, every alias, and every grave site tied to the Commission.”
“You traitorous bastard!” Donato roared, slamming his hands on the table and half-rising from his chair. “If we go down, we take you with us!”
“You can't,” Adrien replied calmly. “Because over the past three weeks, every legitimate asset of the Valente enterprise has been cleanly separated into a blind trust. The illegal channels? I closed them myself. As of midnight tonight, the Valente family name no longer exists in the underworld registry. We are clean. Legitimate. Untouchable.”
“And you think the federal government is just going to let you walk away?” Donato snarled.
“The federal government,” Adrien said with a faint, chilling smile, “is currently executing synchronized raids on all five of your primary compounds using the exact data packets I provided an hour ago. Listen closely, gentlemen.”
As if on cue, the muffled sound of distant sirens began to rise from the streets below the skyscraper. Helicopters thudded overhead.
Donato and the other elders stared at Adrien in absolute, paralyzing horror. They realized too late that Adrien Valente hadn't lost his grip on power—he had simply used his empire as a wrecking ball to clear the board entirely, sacrificing his past to secure an unassailable future.

“This meeting is adjourned,” Adrien said, standing up smoothly and buttoning his suit jacket. He looked down at the petrified patriarchs one last time. “Tell your associates hello from me.”
Adrien turned and walked out of the conference room, leaving the wolves to be devoured by the very system they had manipulated for decades.
