Chapter 2 - The Siege of Long Island

The sprawling Valente estate on Long Island was built like a fortress, surrounded by two-mile-long iron perimeter fences, motion sensors, and thermal cameras. But security was only as strong as the men guarding it—and the Moretti family had spent years planting informants deep within the logistics and security chains of Adrien’s empire.

Within fifteen minutes of Marco’s warning, the estate's external security lights flickered violently and then died. Total darkness swallowed the manicured lawns and the snow-draped gardens.

Inside the nursery, the panic was palpable, though masked by the grim discipline of hardened professionals.

“Power grid is down,” Marco reported, his hand resting instinctively on the grip of his suppressed Sig Sauer pistol. He glanced at Adrien. “They jammed our satellite communications too. It’s an elite hit squad, Boss. Salvatore Moretti wants to cut the head off the snake before the boy can inherit the syndicate.”

Adrien didn't hesitate. He turned away from Marco and looked straight at Hannah, who had instinctively pulled Luca’s bassinet into the reinforced interior panic room attached to the nursery—a hidden chamber lined with Kevlar-reinforced steel walls designed for precisely this kind of attack.

“Get inside the safe room,” Adrien ordered, his voice carrying an absolute, unyielding command.

“And you?” Hannah asked, her eyes darting to the heavy double doors of the nursery suite, where the faint sounds of shouting and shattered glass echoed from the lower levels.

“I have business to attend to,” Adrien said coldly. He reached into his jacket, pulling out a heavy, matte-black Heckler & Koch automatic pistol, checking the magazine with a practiced, mechanical click. “Marco, seal the safe room from the inside. Do not open it for anyone—not even me—unless you hear the specific verification code.”

“Boss—” Marco started to object.

“Do it!” Adrien roared, the sheer force of his authority silencing any further argument.

Marco grabbed Hannah’s arm gently, pulling her into the reinforced steel chamber as the first heavy thuds of explosions reverberated through the mansion’s front foyer. The Morettis had brought heavy breaching charges. They weren't trying to sneak in; they were staging a full-scale military assault.

Hannah clutched a spare blanket to her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked back through the narrowing gap of the closing steel door just in time to see Adrien Valente step out into the hallway, walking toward the gunfire not with fear, but with the cold, calculated fury of an executioner.

Downstairs, the grand marble hallway was a war zone. Glass from ancestral chandeliers littered the floor, crunching beneath the combat boots of half a dozen Moretti mercenaries clad in tactical body armor and night-vision goggles. They moved with military precision, clearing rooms and executing any loyal guard who stood in their way.

“Clear the east wing!” a gruff voice barked in the shadows. “Find the kid! Salvatore wants proof before sunrise!”

Before the mercenary could take another step, a single gunshot echoed through the hallway. The lead operative dropped instantly, a clean round piercing his ceramic plate carrier with lethal velocity.

“Contact! East corridor!” someone screamed.

Adrien stepped out from behind a marble pillar, dual pistols raised. He fired twice with chilling accuracy, dropping two more men before they could bring their assault rifles to bear. The remaining mercenaries scattered, diving behind antique couches and mahogany sideboards, returning blind, deafening bursts of automatic fire that splintered the woodwork and shattered the remaining windows.

“Valente!” a voice mocked from behind a reinforced mahogany pillar. “You’re outmatched! Your estate is compromised, your guards are neutralized, and your son is dead either way! Hand over the boy and we make it quick!”

Adrien didn't answer with words. He dropped a tactical flashbang grenade around the corner, letting it bounce across the polished floor.

Flash. Bang.

A blinding white light and a concussive shockwave ripped through the hallway, followed by agonized screams as the mercenaries clutched their ears and blinded eyes. Adrien surged forward from his cover, moving like a wraith through the smoke and dust. In close quarters, his martial training and decades of street warfare made him a terrifying force of nature. He dispatched the remaining two infiltrators with cold, efficient brutality, leaving the hallway silent save for the crackling of a small electrical fire near the baseboards.

Adrien stood amidst the wreckage, his breathing heavy, a shallow bullet graze bleeding slowly down his left forearm. He holstered his sidearm and turned toward the grand staircase, his mind racing back to the nursery.

If the Morettis had breached the perimeter this fast, there was a mole. A high-ranking mole. And Marco was currently locked inside the safe room with Hannah and his son.

Upstairs, a heavy thud shook the nursery door. Someone was trying to breach the inner sanctum.
