Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle Breached

Back at the Tribeca penthouse, however, the atmosphere was entirely different from a mob war zone.

For the first time in twenty years, the minimalist glass fortress was filled with the sound of a child’s laughter. Poppy had set up a makeshift tea party on the white marble coffee table using three plastic cups and her threadbare teddy bear.

Dario Falcone—wearing a simple black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up—was sitting cross-legged on the floor, holding a tiny pink teacup between his massive, tattooed fingers, gravely discussing the financial state of the teddy bear’s kingdom with absolute seriousness.

Clara stood in the doorway of the kitchen, watching them with a soft, bittersweet smile. For a moment, watching the way Dario’s hard features relaxed whenever Poppy smiled, Clara felt a dangerous, unbidden flutter in her chest.

Stop it, she told herself firmly. He's a mafia boss. You're a widowed seamstress. This is temporary.

Suddenly, the penthouse security monitors wired to the private elevator flashed red.

A sharp, piercing alarm echoed through the apartment.

Dario’s demeanor changed in a fraction of a second. The playful warmth vanished instantly, replaced by the lethal, coiled precision of an apex predator.

"Rocco," Dario spoke into his lapel communicator, his voice cold as ice. "Status."

"Boss, we've been breached," Rocco’s voice crackled through the speaker, punctuated by the dull, heavy thud of silenced gunfire echoing from the subterranean parking garage. "Moni hit squad. Four men made it past the ground floor security detail via the service elevator. They're heading up."

Dario stood up smoothly. He reached behind his back and drew a customized 9mm Sig Sauer from his waistband, checking the clip with practiced, fluid grace.

"Mama, what's happening?" Poppy whispered, her lower lip trembling as she ran over to Clara, burying her face in her mother's skirt.

Clara scooped Poppy up into her arms, her face draining of color. "Dario... please."

Dario turned to them, his slate-gray eyes locking onto Clara’s with absolute, unshakeable certainty.

"Get into the panic room behind the master suite library," Dario ordered, his voice brooking no argument. "Lock the steel door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone—do you hear me, Clara? Anyone—unless I am the one standing outside saying your name."

"Dario, don't go out there—" Clara cried.

"I built this empire to protect what's mine," Dario said quietly, a grim, terrifying smile touching his lips. "And for the first time in my life, I actually have something worth fighting for."

He shoved the security override code into Clara’s hand, turned on his heel, and walked out into the grand hallway just as the reinforced glass doors of the private elevator began to buckle under the assault of thermal charges.
