Chapter 3 - The Tribeca Penthouse

When the black Mercedes pulled into the subterranean parking garage of the luxury high-rise in Tribeca, Clara stared up at the towering glass and steel structure in sheer intimidation.

"Mr. Falcone, we can't stay here," Clara protested, clutching Poppy’s small hand as they rode the private elevator up to the penthouse floor. "I have laundry to finish, and my apartment—"

"Your apartment is currently being watched by two Maroni goors who think breaking your windows will send a message to me," Dario said coldly, stepping out of the elevator into a sprawling, minimalist penthouse of polished concrete, floor-to-ceiling glass, and breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. "Until my security team clears your building, you and Poppy stay here."

Poppy gasped, her eyes going wide as saucers as she stepped onto the plush white rug. "It’s a castle! Mama, look, it’s a glass castle!"

Clara looked around the ultra-modern, echoing space, where not a single family photograph, colorful painting, or trace of human warmth existed. It was a fortress of wealth and solitude.

"Dario—" Clara started, but stopped herself, stunned that she had used his first name. "Mr. Falcone, this is too much. We can't impose on your life."

"My life is entirely empty, Mrs. Alvarez," Dario said flatly, walking over to the kitchen island and pouring two cups of hot cocoa that a private chef had left prepared. He handed one to Poppy, who accepted it with both hands, whispering a polite thank you.

Dario turned to Clara, his slate-gray eyes softening just a fraction. "For ten years, this penthouse has been a tomb. My sister died when I was seventeen, and I spent the next twenty years building an empire to ensure no one could ever hurt my family again. But I forgot what a family actually looked like until your daughter walked across a frozen park and asked me if I was married."

Clara swallowed hard, the defensive walls around her heart crumbling under the quiet sincerity in his voice. She knew who Dario Falcone was. Everyone in New York knew the legend of the Ice King. But standing here in his kitchen, watching him carefully wipe a drop of cocoa from Poppy’s chin, she realized the terrifying mob boss was just a broken boy who had never been allowed to mourn.

"She talks about her daddy going to heaven all the time," Clara whispered, looking down at her worn boots. "Miguel died of a sudden aneurysm eighteen months ago while working double shifts at the docks. We had nothing left. I tried to keep the bakery afloat, but... without a man's protection in this city, you're just prey."

Dario’s jaw clenched. A cold, lethal spark flashed in his eyes.

"No one preys on people under my roof, Clara," Dario said, his voice dropping into the quiet, absolute tone that made empires tremble. "Starting tomorrow, the entire Maroni syndicate is going to learn what happens when you threaten a Falcone asset."
