Chapter 6 - The Brave Song

One year later.
The summer sun beamed down on the rolling lawns of the Lake Forest estate, turning the waters of Lake Michigan into a shimmering sheet of sapphire blue.
The grand mansion was no longer a silent, cold mausoleum preserved in grief.
Laughter and music echoed through the open windows. The grand piano in the living room was open, its keys polished and played daily. Colorful drawings covered the refrigerator in the sunlit kitchen, and toys were scattered happily across the patio.
Out on the back lawn, a massive white marquee tent was decorated with white roses, sunflowers, and fairy lights.
Dozens of friends, staff members, and community members gathered around the long banquet tables, laughing and celebrating.
Seven-year-old Owen and Caleb, wearing matching navy three-piece suits with yellow bowties, were running across the grass, playing tag with Frankie’s young grandchildren.
Matthew stood on the patio, wearing a bespoke black tuxedo, holding a glass of champagne.
Beside him stood Rose.
She wore a breathtaking floor-length A-line gown of ivory silk, simple pearl earrings sparkling in the afternoon sun, her chestnut hair styled in elegant waves around her shoulders. A brilliant diamond wedding ring glittered on her finger.
"You look stunning, Mrs. Avery," Matthew whispered into her ear, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and pulling her softly against his chest.
Rose leaned back against him, resting her head against his shoulder with a deep, blissful sigh.
"I still feel like I'm dreaming sometimes, Matty," Rose smiled, looking out at the sunlit gardens and their laughing boys.
"It's not a dream, Rosie," Matthew said softly, kissing her cheek. "You saved us. You gave my boys their voices back, and you gave me my heart back."
From the marquee tent, the soft sound of an acoustic guitar began to play.
Owen and Caleb came running up the patio steps, holding hands, pulling Matthew and Rose toward the wooden dance floor under the tent.
"Aunt Rosie! Daddy! Come on!" Caleb shouted happily. "It's time for the brave song!"
Matthew and Rose walked onto the dance floor, surrounded by the warm cheers and claps of their loved ones.
Rose picked up the small crimson acoustic guitar—now fully restored, its wooden frame shining beneath the warm fairy lights—and sat on a stool at the edge of the stage.
She began to strum the familiar, gentle chords that Claire had composed years ago.
Owen and Caleb stood beside her, singing along in their sweet, clear voices, their faces glowing with absolute happiness:
“When the clouds grow dark, and the rain starts to fall, We stand tall together, through the storm and all... Love is our anchor, brave and true, I'll always be here, watching over you.”
Matthew stood in the center of the floor, holding Rose’s hand as she played, tears of pure, unadulterated joy welling in his eyes.
He looked up at the clear blue sky above Lake Michigan, feeling a gentle, warm breeze brush past his cheek—like a silent, loving blessing from Claire above.
