Chapter 2 - The Red Guitar's Secret

Silence blanketed the room, heavy and suffocating.
Vanessa’s face went from pale to ghastly gray. Her hand twitched near her handbag, her knuckles turning white around the strap.
"She’s insane," Vanessa muttered, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "Matthew, she’s a lunatic. Call security right now and have her removed from the property!"
Matthew didn't call security.
Instead, he turned his head slowly toward Vanessa, his dark eyes burning with a cold, terrifying realization. For two years, he had lived in a haze of work, grief, and denial, believing the police report that claimed Claire’s car had simply lost traction on a rain-slicked curve on Route 41.
He had trusted Vanessa. He had allowed the Whitmore family to handle the funeral arrangements, to manage Claire’s charitable foundation, and to maintain influence over his sons' lives.
"Hand me the guitar, Vanessa," Matthew commanded softly.
"Matthew, don't indulge this delusional—"
"Hand me the guitar."
The roar in Matthew's voice rattled the glass in the grand windows.
Vanessa flinched violently. Shaking with anger and fear, she shoved the small red instrument into Matthew’s hands.
Matthew held the guitar. It was a custom, short-scale parlor acoustic that Claire had bought during their honeymoon in Nashville. It was bright crimson, painted with small white daisies around the soundhole.
He looked down at Rose. "Show me."
Rose knelt beside him on the rug. She took the guitar from his hands, unclipped a small brass strap button at the very base of the body, and reached two fingers inside the soundhole near the internal bracing block.
With a soft click, a small wooden panel inside the soundboard released.
Out fell a tiny, metallic object—a high-capacity USB flash drive sealed inside a clear plastic bag—and a folded sheet of faded yellow notebook paper.
Matthew’s heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer.
He unfolded the paper. The handwriting was unmistakably Claire’s.
Matty,
If you are reading this, it means I am gone, and you finally looked inside my brave guitar. I am so sorry I lied to you about my past. I was trying to protect you and our precious boys from the darkness my father and Vanessa created.
Vanessa found out I discovered the offshore accounts. They aren't just laundering money through Whitmore Logistics, Matty—they are using our shipping containers to move illegal pharmaceuticals through the Lake Michigan ports. When I threatened to go to the FBI, Vanessa told me I would never live to see the twins turn seven.
Don't trust her, Matty. Protect our sons. Find my sister, Rose. She is the only one who can help you save our family.
I love you forever, Claire.
Matthew stared at the paper, the words blurring as a wave of immense, suffocating fury washed over him.
He looked up from the note.
Vanessa was already backing out of the living room toward the grand foyer, her hand reaching into her handbag for her car keys.
"Matthew..." Vanessa whimpered, her voice cracking into a high-pitched whine. "It’s a forgery! She forged Claire’s handwriting! You know how unstable Claire was before the accident—"
Before Vanessa could finish her sentence, Matthew moved with the speed of a striking predator.
He crossed the living room in three long strides, grabbing Vanessa by her cream-colored suit collar just as her hand touched the brass handle of the front door. He slammed her back against the heavy oak paneling.
"You killed my wife," Matthew growled, his voice a gravelly, demonic whisper that vibrated through the foyer.
"No! It was an accident! The brakes failed!" Vanessa screamed, tears of panic finally breaking through her cold facade. "I loved my sister!"
"You tampered with her car," Matthew said, his fingers tightening on her lapels until the fabric ripped. "You threatened her, you killed her, and then you walked into my home for two years pretending to mourn her while trying to erase every trace of her memory from my sons!"
"Matthew, please!" Vanessa sobbed. "Think of the family name! Think of the company!"
"Frankie!" Matthew bellowed at the top of his lungs.
The side door of the foyer burst open, and Frankie—a burly, forty-five-year-old former Marine who served as Matthew’s chief of personal security—ran into the hallway, followed by two armed guards.
"Boss?!" Frankie gasped, taking in the scene.
"Lock down the estate," Matthew ordered, his voice echoing like an iron door shutting forever. "Take her phone. Lock her in the security office downstairs. Call my personal legal team and tell the State Police Homicide Division that I have the evidence for the murder of Claire Avery."

"You can't do this to me!" Vanessa shrieked as Frankie and the guards dragged her kicking and screaming down the hallway. "I'm a Whitmore! You'll lose everything, Matthew! The merger will collapse!"
"Let it burn," Matthew spat, watching her get dragged away into the dark.
