Chapter 5 - The Little Guardian Angel

Six months later.
Spring had arrived in Greenwich, Connecticut. The air was fresh with the scent of blooming cherry blossoms and wet earth. Nestled at the end of a private, tree-lined drive stood a breathtaking French-country estate, featuring sunlit glass windows, sprawling green lawns, and a sparkling pool.
A sleek black Bentley rolled quietly up the driveway, stopping in front of the main entrance.
Marco opened the door, and Aleandro Moretti stepped out, wearing a sharp grey bespoke suit without a tie. His dark eyes, which had been hardened by decades of underworld violence, seemed softer now, reflecting the peaceful green of the countryside.
From the front porch, seven-year-old Emma came running out, her dark pigtails bouncing with every step.
"Mr. Aleandro!" she cheered, her face lighting up with pure, unadulterated joy.
Aleandro’s face broke into a broad, genuine smile—a smile that held no masks, no secrets, and no fear. He caught the little girl in his arms, swinging her up in the air before setting her down on the soft grass.
"Look at you, Emma!" Aleandro laughed softly, adjusting her small pink coat. "You’ve grown two inches since I last saw you!"
"Mama made me eat all my vegetables!" Emma giggled, grabbing his hand. "Come inside! I drew a new picture for your office!"
Elena walked out onto the porch, wearing a warm, stylish sweater. Her skin was glowing, her face free of the lines of exhaustion and fear that had haunted her for years when she worked sixty hours a week cleaning floors.
"Mr. Moretti, welcome," Elena said, bowing slightly with deep respect. "Please, come in. Lunch is almost ready."
"Elena, how many times must I tell you?" Aleandro chided gently, walking up the steps. "Call me Aleandro. You are not my employee anymore."
"It’s hard to break old habits, sir," she smiled warmly, leading him into the sunlit kitchen, which smelled of fresh garlic, roasted chicken, and freshly baked bread.
Over the past six months, Aleandro had completely restructured the Moretti syndicate. With the Valenti family dismantled and absorbed, Aleandro had shifted the family’s assets away from street violence and illegal operations, transitioning entirely into legitimate high-end real estate, global logistics, and legal technology investments.
The blood money had been cleaned; the empire was now legitimate, untouchable, and peaceful.
And the center of his new life was this little family.
They sat at the sun-drenched dining table, enjoying a quiet, joyful lunch. Emma chattered endlessly about her new private school, her art teacher, and her new golden retriever puppy, which was currently sleeping under the table.
"And how is Leo?" Elena asked softly while serving coffee.
Aleandro smiled. "Isabella called me last week from Zurich. Leo’s kidney transplant was a complete success. He’s fully recovered, playing soccer for his school team. They’re happy, Elena. They’re finally free."
Elena let out a soft sigh of relief, placing a hand over her heart. "Thank God. Everyone deserves a second chance."
"Yes," Aleandro murmured, watching Emma color a drawing of a giant sunshine on a fresh piece of paper. "Some of us get a second chance because of angel intervention."
After lunch, Aleandro walked with Emma into the lush back garden. They sat on a wooden bench under the shade of an old oak tree.
Emma pulled a small, framed drawing out of her bag and handed it to him.
Aleandro took it. It was a crayon drawing of three people standing in front of a big house under a giant yellow sun: a little girl with pigtails, a mother, and a tall man in a black suit holding a shield over them.
At the bottom of the paper, written in messy seven-year-old handwriting, were the words: MY GUARDIAN ALEANDRO.
Aleandro looked at the drawing for a long moment. He felt a lump rise in his throat—a feeling he hadn't experienced since he was a boy. He had spent his entire life being feared, obeyed, and hated. He had been called a Don, a monster, a king of the dark.
But here, in the eyes of this innocent child, he was simply a protector. A guardian.
"Do you like it?" Emma asked nervously, tugging at his sleeve.
Aleandro looked down at her, his eyes warm with genuine emotion. "Emma, this is the most valuable thing I own. I’m going to hang it in my main office, right where everyone can see it."
"Better than the big oil painting?" she teased with a mischievous wink.
Aleandro burst into a rich, loud laugh—a sound that filled the peaceful garden. "a million times better than that old painting, little one."
He wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close as they watched the spring breeze rustle through the leaves of the oak tree.

The dark life he had led, the violent wars he had fought, the treachery that had nearly claimed his life—all of it had led him to this quiet, beautiful moment.
He had lost a treacherous fiancée, but he had gained something infinitely more precious: a true family, a clean soul, and a little guardian angel who had saved his life by whispering a secret behind a painting.
