Chapter 3 - The Pier 42 Ambush

Thursday night arrived under a blanket of heavy, suffocating fog that rolled off the Hudson River. Pier 42 was a bleak, industrial graveyard of rusty shipping containers, towering cranes, and slick concrete soaked by the icy drizzle.

At 11:45 PM, three black, unmarked SUVs rolled silently into the abandoned shipyard, their headlights turned off. They parked in the shadow of a massive warehouse overlooking the water.

Inside the lead vehicle, Julian Valenti sat in the back seat, adjusting his leather gloves. He was thirty-five, sharp-featured, with cold blue eyes and a cruel, arrogant smile. Beside him sat four heavily armed mercenaries carrying silenced submachine guns.

Julian checked his encrypted tablet. A live tracking map showed the position of two cargo ships docking at Pier 42.

"Is the path clear?" Julian asked his lieutenant, a scarred enforcer named Victor.

"Isabella came through, boss," Victor replied, racking the bolt of his assault rifle. "The security cameras at the south dock were disabled ten minutes ago. Moretti’s security guards are all concentrated at the north gate, completely unaware. The gold shipment is sitting inside Container 108, completely unguarded."

Julian let out a cold, triumphant chuckle. "Aleandro Moretti... the legendary Don of New York, brought to his knees by a pretty skirt and a few sweet words. His father was a lion, but Aleandro is just a fool in an expensive suit."

Julian stepped out of the vehicle, his long trench coat snapping in the freezing wind. "Let's go. Move fast, load the gold, and burn the pier. Leave no witnesses."

Ten heavily armed Valenti operatives crept through the misty maze of shipping containers, their boots splashing silently in the puddles. They reached Container 108—a massive, yellow steel box sitting right on the edge of the dark water.

Victor stepped forward, taking out a hydraulic bolt cutter. With a heavy CLANG, the heavy padlock snapped and fell to the concrete.

Victor threw open the heavy steel doors, aiming his gun into the dark interior.

"Clear!" Victor called out.

Julian stepped forward, shining a high-powered tactical flashlight inside.

The light illuminated the interior of the container. There were no wooden crates. There were no ingots of raw gold.

Instead, sitting in the absolute center of the empty steel container was a single, elegant wooden chair. And sitting on the chair was a small, battery-operated speaker, pulsing with a glowing red LED light.

Julian’s blood instantly ran cold. "It’s a trap! Get back—"

Before he could finish his sentence, the speaker crackled to life. Aleandro Moretti’s calm, deep voice echoed through the metal container, amplified and terrifyingly clear:

"Good evening, Julian. I hope you like the gold."

FLOODLIGHTS!

Suddenly, massive stadium-grade floodlights snapped on all around the dock, blasting piercing white light into the fog, completely blinding Julian and his men.

"Drop your weapons! Do it now!" a booming voice roared over a megawatt PA system.

From behind every container, every crane, and every shadow, dozens of tactical Moretti enforcers emerged, dressed in black body armor, aiming high-caliber assault rifles at the trapped Valenti squad. Red laser sights danced across Julian’s chest like a cluster of lethal rubies.

In the center of the dock, stepping out from behind a massive crane, walked Aleandro Moretti. He wore an immaculate black wool coat, flanked by Marco and a dozen elite bodyguards.

Julian panicked. "Kill him! Kill them all!" he screamed, reaching for his sidearm.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

A brief, violent burst of gunfire erupted. The Moretti snipers posted on the crane towers fired with surgical precision. Within five seconds, all eight of Julian’s mercenaries collapsed to the ground, disarmed or shot dead in the concrete before they could even pull their triggers.

Julian fell to his knees, a sniper’s red laser dot resting squarely between his eyes. He was bleeding from his shoulder, gasping for air, his face pale with utter shock.

Aleandro walked slowly across the slick concrete, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically until he stood right in front of the kneeling rival don.

"How... how did you know?" Julian gasped, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Isabella... she didn't betray me! She couldn't!"

"Isabella didn't betray you, Julian," Aleandro said calmly, looking down at him with icy contempt. "She was too terrified of what you’d do to her brother. But you forgot one thing."

Aleandro leaned down, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You forgot that God watches over the innocent. A six-year-old girl saw your little honeypot plant the wire in my office. A little maid's daughter undid three years of your precious planning in three seconds."

Julian’s mouth gaped open. "A... a child?"

"A child," Aleandro confirmed. "And while you were preparing to steal my non-existent gold, my men were busy in Boston."

Aleandro pulled out his phone, unlocked the screen, and held it in front of Julian’s face.

On the screen was a live video feed of a luxury private hospital room in Manhattan. Sixteen-year-old Leo Vaughn was resting comfortably in a bed, surrounded by top-tier doctors and guarded by four Moretti soldiers.

Julian’s eyes bulged. "No... no, that’s impossible!"

"Leo is safe," Aleandro said coldly. "He has a matching donor line-up for next week. You no longer have a leash on Isabella, Julian. You have nothing."

Julian began to tremble, the reality of his utter defeat crashing over him like a tidal wave. "Aleandro... please! We can make a deal! Half the city! I’ll give you all the Valenti territory in Brooklyn—"

"I don't make deals with men who threaten children and hide behind women," Aleandro cut him off mercilessly.

He gestured to Marco. "Take him to the warehouse. Strip him of everything. I want every asset, every account, every contact in the Valenti network transferred to us by morning. And once he has signed everything..."

Aleandro turned his back, walking away into the fog. "...let the harbor take care of the rest."

"NO! MORETTI! PLEASE! NOOOO!" Julian’s frantic screams echoed across the foggy harbor as Marco’s men dragged him into the dark depths of an waiting van.

Aleandro pulled his collar up against the cold night air. The war was won, but the most painful confrontation was still waiting for him back in the city.

It was time to face the woman who had shared his bed, stolen his heart, and nearly cost him his life.
