Chapter 6 - A New Beginning
Three months later.
The high-profile trial of Carter Reed and Sarah Jenkins had concluded. Carter received a fifteen-year sentence in federal prison for systemic corporate fraud, while Sarah was sentenced to three years of probation, mandatory community service, and ordered to pay restitution that wiped out her entire life savings.
Sarah was now working as a night-shift cleaner at a local train station, completely forgotten by the high-society world she had so desperately tried to enter.
Meanwhile, the sun broke over the skyline of the city, casting a warm golden glow over the central park.
In a small, peaceful open-air cafe near the river, Ethan sat at a simple wooden table. He wore his favorite simple cotton shirt and comfortable jeans, reading a paperback book with a steaming cup of black coffee beside him.
Footsteps approached. Maya Lin, wearing a simple cardigan and holding two sketchbooks, walked over with a soft smile.
"Is this seat taken, Mr. Chairman?" she asked playfully.
Ethan looked up, his face lighting up with a genuine, warm smile—a smile he hadn't worn in years. "Only if you promise not to let me buy the expensive pastries, Maya."
Maya laughed softly, sitting down across from him. "Deal. But only because I brought home-baked blueberry muffins."
She set a small Tupperware container on the table. She didn't care about the press, she didn't care about his billions, and she had stood by his side when he was just another face in the engineering lab. She valued him for his mind, his kindness, and his quiet integrity.
Ethan reached out and took a muffin, taking a bite. "Perfect," he said softly, looking into her warm brown eyes.
"So," Maya said, leaning forward on her elbows. "Now that the company is stable and the new charity foundation is running, what's your big plan for the weekend, billionaire?"
Ethan looked out at the peaceful park, feeling the gentle morning breeze, completely at peace with who he was and where he was going.
