Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Century

Six months later.

The Federal District Court was packed to maximum capacity. Dozens of news cameras lined the exterior steps, while hundreds of spectators sat inside the grand courtroom.

At the defense table sat Victor Vance and Chloe Vance, dressed in orange prison jumpsuits. Gone were the tailored suits, the diamonds, and the arrogant sneers. Victor looked aged, defeated, his hands trembling in handcuffs, while Chloe stared at the floor, crying silently.

At the prosecution table sat Agent Marcus and the lead state attorney. Sitting quietly in the front row of the gallery was Ellen, wearing a modest navy blue dress, her hair neatly tied back.

Beside her sat Julian.

He looked entirely transformed. His skin was full of healthy color, his frame had regained its strength, and he breathed deeply and clearly through his new lungs. He held his mother’s hand tightly in his own.

The judge slammed his gavel down. "Court is now in session for the sentencing of Victor Vance and Chloe Vance."

The prosecutor stood up. "Your Honor, over the past six months, the state has uncovered decades of systemic murder, extortion, chemical dumping, and corporate terrorism orchestrated by Victor Vance. He destroyed countless lives, including the murder of Thomas Carter—Julian’s father—and attempted to murder Julian Carter himself."

The prosecutor turned to look at Victor. "Victor Vance acted without mercy, without remorse, and without humanity. We request the maximum sentence allowed by federal law."

The judge looked down at Victor. "Mr. Vance, do you have anything to say before I pass judgment?"

Victor stood up slowly, his voice raspy. "I... I was trying to build an empire... My daughter knew nothing..."

"That is a lie!" the judge interjected coldly. "Evidence shows Chloe Vance actively participated in extortion and the cover-up of attempted murder."

The judge struck the gavel down with authority.

"For the charges of corporate murder, illegal chemical trafficking, obstruction of justice, and attempted murder: Victor Vance is hereby sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, to be served in a maximum-security federal facility."

The gallery erupted into cheers! Victor sank back into his chair, covering his face as federal marshals stepped forward.

"Furthermore," the judge continued, "Chloe Vance is sentenced to fifteen years in state prison for her role as an accessory to murder and financial fraud."

Chloe shrieked as she was pulled up by her arms. "Father! Do something! You promised me I would never go to prison! FATHER!"

Victor didn't even look at her as they were both marched away in chains through the side door, erased from society forever.

Julian stood up, wrapping his arm around Ellen’s shoulders as people in the courtroom applauded. For the first time in fifteen years, the shadow of fear and injustice that had hung over their family was completely gone.

As they walked down the courthouse steps into the bright afternoon sunshine, reporters swarmed around them, pushing microphones forward.

"Julian! How does it feel to finally get justice for your father?" "Mrs. Ellen! What are you going to do with your lives now?"

Julian took the microphone gently, looking into the news cameras, then down at his mother with a warm, radiant smile.

"For years, people believed that money and power could buy anything," Julian said into the microphone, his voice ringing strong and clear. "Victor Vance thought he could buy my father's life, buy the law, and buy my silence. But he couldn't buy the love of a mother who never gave up on her son."

He looked at Ellen, tears of happiness brimming in his eyes. "My mother saved my life twice. Now, we are going to live the life my father always wanted for us."
