Chapter 2 - Into the Viper's Den

The storm showed no mercy as Ellen sprinted through the flooded streets toward the city’s federal building. Her lungs burned, and her legs ached, but the image of Julian coughing up blood in that luxury mansion drove her forward.

She slammed her body against the glass doors of the federal precinct, bursting into the lobby drenched in rain and mud.

"Ma'am! You can't be in here!" an armed officer shouted, rushing toward her. "The building is closed!"

"I need to see Agent Marcus!" Ellen screamed, her voice hoarse, clutching the leather notebook against her chest like a lifeline. "Please! My son’s life depends on it! Victor Vance is going to kill him tonight!"

A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped out of an elevator, holding a mug of coffee. He froze when he heard the name 'Victor Vance.'

"I'm Agent Marcus," the man said, walking over quickly and assessing Ellen’s distraught state. "What do you know about Vance?"

"My son... Julian... he’s inside Vance's estate right now," Ellen sobbed, handing him the blood-stained letter and the leather notebook. "He’s trying to destroy Vance’s illegal servers. Vance killed my husband, and now he’s poisoning my son! Please, read this!"

Agent Marcus quickly flipped through the notebook. His eyes widened as he scanned the detailed ledger of offshore accounts, chemical shipment logs, and video file locations.

"My God..." Marcus whispered. "We’ve been trying to build a case against Victor Vance for six years. This notebook has everything—bank routing numbers, bribery logs, murder instructions..." He looked at Ellen, his expression grave. "Your son just handed us the keys to bring down Vance's entire empire."

"Then save him!" Ellen begged, grabbing Marcus's lapels. "He’s dying! He thinks he’s going to sacrifice himself tonight!"

Marcus turned to his officers immediately. "Tactical Team A and B, suit up! We have a active hostage and arson situation at the Vance Estate! Move, move, move!"

Within minutes, three armored SWAT vehicles roared out of the precinct garage, tires screaming against the wet asphalt. Ellen sat in the back of Agent Marcus’s vehicle, staring at the flashing red lights, praying with every beat of her heart that she wouldn't be too late.

Meanwhile, back at the Vance mansion, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Julian stood in the dimly lit, high-security server room located in the mansion's basement. His skin was dangerously pale, dark circles surrounding his sunken eyes. He coughed violently into a white handkerchief, pulling it away to see fresh, thick blood staining the fabric.

He looked at his watch. 11:45 PM.

His fingers flew across the server keyboard, uploading the final deletion codes while planting small, incendiary devices across the main mainframe banks.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door behind him hissed open.

"Did you really think I wouldn't notice the bandwidth drop, Julian?" a cold, aristocratic voice echoed.

Julian turned around slowly. Victor Vance stepped into the room, wearing an expensive tailored suit, flanked by four armed security guards. Behind them stood Chloe, holding a glass of wine, a sneer plastered on her face.

"You're a clever boy, Julian," Victor said, pulling a silver pistol from his jacket. "You played the dutiful son-in-law very well. But my head of security just informed me that two million dollars was transferred from my private cayman account two hours ago."

"It's over, Victor," Julian rasped, his voice weak but his eyes fierce. "The files are already gone. The ledgers, the shipping manifests from the explosion fifteen years ago—everything."

Chloe snorted, taking a sip of wine. "You pathetic little rodent. Did you really think you could ruin us? Where is your pathetic mother, by the way? Crying in a gutter somewhere?"

Julian’s fists clenched, his blood boiling. "Don't you dare speak about my mother!"

Victor raised the gun, aiming it directly at Julian’s heart. "It doesn't matter where she is. Once I put a bullet through your chest, my men will hunt her down and bury her right next to your father. You failed, Julian."

May you like

Julian smiled bitterly, reaching his hand toward his pocket, where the trigger for the incendiary charges lay. "I didn't fail. I bought her enough time."

"Die then," Victor said coldly, pulling the trigger.
