Chapter 3 - The Counteroffensive

By 8:00 AM the next morning, the war had officially begun.
Victoria met me at a quiet coffee shop near the courthouse while Lily was resting safely under the care of my trusted neighbor, Sarah.
"Linda’s strategy is simple," Victoria explained, laying out several legal documents on the table. "She wants to ruin you financially, destroy your reputation, and then file an emergency petition for temporary custody of Lily, claiming you are an unfit, violent father. Once she has Lily, she will force you to drop the criminal charges against Rebecca in exchange for seeing your daughter."
"She’s a monster," I said, my knuckles white as I gripped my coffee cup. "She doesn't care about Lily at all."
"Narcissists only care about control," Victoria said coolly. "So, we hit her where it hurts most: her image and her bank account. First, Rebecca’s bail hearing is at 2:00 PM today. Linda has hired top defense attorneys to get her released on personal recognizance. We cannot let that happen."
"How do we stop it?"
"We release the full, unedited high-definition video to the public, along with the certified medical report from Dr. Vance," Victoria said, pulling out a tablet. "Linda paid off a local tabloid to leak that fake story about you. But I have connections with national investigative journalists. By noon, the real story will be everywhere."
"What about my job?" I asked. "Richard Vance fired me."
Victoria smirked. "Richard Vance’s firm relies heavily on corporate tax credits, which my firm oversees. I already called Richard this morning. I informed him that if he terminates your contract under false pretenses without due process, Sterling & Cross will initiate a full audit of his firm's offshore accounts. He’s currently sweating through his designer suit and will likely call you within the hour to offer you a promotion and a paid leave of absence."
I stared at Victoria in disbelief. In less than twelve hours, she had completely reversed the momentum of Linda’s attack.
"Now," Victoria continued, her expression hardening. "Let's go to court."
At 1:45 PM, the hallway outside Courtroom 302 was packed with reporters. News of the incident had spread like wildfire after Victoria released the unedited video online. The internet was in an uproar; hashtags demanding justice for Lily were trending nationwide.
When Linda and Arthur walked down the corridor, surrounded by a team of four high-priced lawyers, they were met with a barrage of flashing cameras and shouting reporters.
"Mrs. Carter! Did you watch your granddaughter get abused?" "Rebecca Carter, are you facing felony child abuse charges?"
Linda looked furious, her perfectly styled hair slightly disheveled as her guards pushed reporters away. When her eyes landed on me standing next to Victoria Sterling, her face paled slightly, but she quickly masked it with a sneer.
She walked straight up to me, ignoring Victoria.
"You think you’re clever, Daniel?" Linda hissed, her voice dripping with poison. "Hiring a high-priced shark? You’re using money you don't have. When this is over, you will be sleeping on the streets, and Lily will be calling me 'Mother'."
"You touch my daughter again, Linda, and jail will be the least of your concerns," I replied, standing tall.
"Silence!" Victoria stepped between us, towering over Linda. "Mrs. Carter, I suggest you advise your daughter to plead guilty today. Because if this goes to trial, I will personally ensure she serves the maximum ten-year sentence for felony child abuse and false imprisonment. And I won't hesitate to name you as an accessory after the fact."
Linda glared at Victoria, her lip trembling with rage. "You don't scare me, Sterling."
Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocating. Rebecca sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, looking disheveled, terrified, and stripped of her usual arrogance.
When the judge took the bench, Rebecca’s lead attorney stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, my client is a respectable member of the community with no prior criminal record. This entire incident was a tragic family misunderstanding exaggerated by an emotionally unstable relative. We request bail be set at a modest amount."
Victoria stood up, her voice ringing clear throughout the room. "Your Honor, the prosecution requests that bail be denied entirely, or set at a minimum of five million dollars. The defendant engaged in explicit, brutal physical violence against a five-year-old child, as captured on clear video footage. Furthermore, the defendant and her mother have actively attempted to intimidate witnesses and tamper with media coverage."
Victoria submitted the medical photos of Lily’s bruises and the raw video file.
The judge reviewed the materials. As he watched the video on his monitor, his brow furrowed, and his expression turned cold.
He slammed his gavel down hard.
"Bail is denied," the judge declared firmly. "Given the violent nature of the offense documented on video and the potential threat to the minor victim, the defendant, Rebecca Carter, will remain in custody pending trial."
"No! Mom! Help me!" Rebecca shrieked, breaking into hysterical tears as the bailiffs grabbed her arms to escort her back to the holding cells. "Mom! Don't let them take me!"
"Rebecca!" Linda screamed, rushing toward the wooden railing, but court security pushed her back.
Linda turned to me, her eyes bloodshot with pure hatred. "You monster! You put your own sister in a cage!"
"She put herself there when she put her hands on my child," I said coldly.
As I walked out of the courtroom beside Victoria, my phone rang. It was Richard Vance.
"Daniel! Daniel, my friend!" Richard’s voice was dripping with desperation. "Look, there was a terrible misunderstanding this morning. I didn't have all the facts! Your job is completely safe. In fact, we want to offer you a full paid sabbatical for as long as you need!"
I smiled bitterly. "Keep your job, Richard. I resign. And tell Linda that her money can't save her anymore."
I hung up the phone. But as we stepped out of the courthouse steps into the bright afternoon sun, Victoria’s phone chimed with an urgent notification. She looked at the screen, and for the first time, her confident posture stiffened.
"Daniel," Victoria said, her voice grave. "We have a problem."
"What is it?"
"Linda just filed an emergency ex-parte order with the Family Court. She claimed you are psychologically unstable and violent—citing the fact that you struck her at the party. A family judge just signed an emergency order granting Child Protective Services temporary custody of Lily pending an evaluation."

My heart stopped. "What? No! They can't take my daughter!"
"They are on their way to your apartment right now with social workers and police officers," Victoria said, grabbing my arm. "We need to get there before they take Lily."
