Chapter 1 - The Shattered Facade

The heavy silence in the birthday hall was louder than any music. A few seconds ago, my mother was whispering threats about "family dignity," and my sister Rebecca was smirking behind her glass of champagne. Now, the glow of the guest’s smartphone screen illuminated the ugly truth.

The video was crystal clear. It showed Rebecca screaming at five-year-old Lily, snatching her by her small arms, slapping her face with enough force to spin her around, and violently dragging her into the laundry room. It also captured my mother, Linda, watching the entire ordeal with cold indifference, casually adjusting her pearl necklace while my daughter wept.

“That… that’s an edit! It’s AI!” Rebecca stammered, her voice cracking as her face drained of all color. She stepped back, bumping into the cake table and sending the three-tiered strawberry cake crashing to the floor. “Someone is trying to frame me!”

“Frame you?” The guest who held the phone—a quiet woman named Sarah, who lived down the street—stepped forward boldly. “I recorded this live on my phone two minutes ago, Rebecca. I heard Lily screaming from the hallway.”

I tightened my hold on Lily, burying her face into my shoulder so she wouldn't have to look at the monsters in front of her. My blood was boiling, but the physical rage that had made me strike Linda moments ago had crystallized into something far cold and calculating.

“You put your hands on my daughter,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet it carried across the frozen room. “And you,” I turned to Linda, who was holding her bruised cheek, glaring at me with venom, “you stood by and let it happen.”

“Daniel, calm down!” Linda hissed, trying to regain control of the room. She swept her eyes over the remaining guests, who were already whispering and reaching for their own phones. “This is a private family matter. Everyone, please leave! The party is over!”

“No, the party isn’t over. Your lie is,” I retorted. I turned to Sarah. “Can you send that video to my phone right now?”

“Already sent, Daniel,” Sarah replied softly, giving me a look of deep sympathy. “And I’ve already called the police.”

Panic instantly erupted in Rebecca’s eyes. She lunged forward, trying to grab Sarah’s phone. “Delete it! Delete it right now! You have no right to film in my house!”

Before Rebecca could touch Sarah, I stepped into her path, blocking her with my body. “Touch her, Rebecca, and I won’t just let the law handle you.”

“Daniel!” my father, Arthur, finally spoke up, stepping out from the shadows near the ruined cake. He had been silent the whole time, as he always was whenever my mother and sister tore someone apart. “That is your sister! You can’t let her go to jail over a discipline issue! Lily was throwing a tantrum!”

“Look at her face, Dad!” I roared, pulling back Lily’s hair slightly to reveal the deep red handprint and the dark finger marks bruising her delicate arms. “Is this discipline? She’s five years old! She was terrified to even ask if she needed to apologize for being beaten!”

Arthur flinched, looking away from Lily’s injuries, but Linda stepped in front of him, her face twisted in rage. “She’s a spoiled brat, just like her mother was! Rebecca was only trying to teach her manners! If you call the police on your own sister, Daniel, you are dead to this family. We will disown you. We will strip you of your position at the firm!”

I looked at Linda, the woman who had birthed me, and for the first time in my life, I felt absolutely nothing for her. No affection, no obligation, no fear.

“Disown me then,” I said coldly. “Because as of this second, you aren’t my mother, and she isn’t my sister.”

Siren lights suddenly flushed red and blue through the large glass windows of the living room. The police had arrived.

Rebecca began to hyperventilate, clutching Linda’s arm. “Mom, do something! I can’t go to jail! My reputation! My job!”

Two officers walked into the venue, taking in the scene: the smashed cake, the terrified child in my arms, and the visibly panicked family.

“We received a call regarding child abuse,” the lead officer announced.

“Officer, it’s a mistake!” Linda immediately blurted out, putting on a sweet, maternal facade. “My son had a mental breakdown. He attacked me—look at my face! And he’s making up wild accusations about his sister.”

The officer looked at me, then at Lily’s bruised cheeks and trembling frame.

“I am the child’s father,” I said calmly, handing my phone to the officer. “Here is the video footage of the incident, recorded by a witness five minutes ago.”

The officer took the phone and played the video. As the sound of Rebecca’s harsh slap and Lily’s tiny scream echoed through the police officer’s speaker, the officer’s expression hardened into iron. He turned his eyes toward Rebecca.

“Ma’am, put your hands behind your back.”

“No! You can’t do this!” Rebecca screamed as the second officer stepped forward with handcuffs. “Daniel, tell them to stop! Mom! Dad!”

Linda tried to push the officer away. “Get your hands off my daughter! Do you know who we are? My husband is—”

“Ma’am, step back or you will be arrested for obstructing an officer,” the lead policeman warned sternly.

As the steel cuffs clicked around Rebecca’s wrists, she looked at me with pure hatred. “I will ruin you for this, Daniel! You and that pathetic little girl!”

“Take her away,” I said coldly.

May you like

As they led Rebecca out in front of all the remaining guests—many of whom were live-streaming the entire arrest on social media—Linda turned to me, her voice trembling with demonic rage. “You think you’ve won, Daniel? You have no idea what I am capable of. By tomorrow morning, you will have no job, no money, and I will take Lily away from you through Child Protective Services. You are going to burn.”

I pulled Lily closer to my chest, kissing her forehead. “Try it,” I whispered. “Because I have nothing left to lose, but you have everything.”
