Chapter 7 - The New Empire

One year later, the shores of Long Island were warm and bright under the summer sun.

A beautiful, white colonial estate sat overlooking the sparkling blue water of the Sound, surrounded by manicured green lawns, blooming wild roses, and a simple wooden fence. There were still security guards positioned discreetly at the gates, but the atmosphere inside was filled with the sound of laughter, music, and the salty sea breeze.

On the wooden deck of the house, a large table was set with plates of fresh fruit, lemonade, and a birthday cake with four bright candles.

Four-year-old Leo Duca was running through the grass, his dark curls flying in the wind as he chased a golden retriever puppy, his laughter echoing over the sound of the waves.

"Slow down, Leo!" Cameron called out, her voice warm and filled with a deep, radiant happiness.

She was standing near the deck railing, wearing a beautiful, flowing white sundress that caught the sea breeze. Her skin was glowing with health, and her hair was styled in soft, loose waves around her shoulders. Her mother’s cancer was officially in complete remission, her medical bills fully paid off, and she was now running the Duca Family Foundation, which funded free medical care and psychological support for victims of domestic violence and child trauma across the state.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind.

Matteo pressed a gentle kiss to the side of her neck, his chin resting against her shoulder as he pulled her back against his chest. He looked relaxed, his dark eyes filled with a peace that had once seemed impossible for a man of his standing.

He had officially retired from the active, violent operations of the Duca family, transferring his massive shipping and construction holdings into fully legitimate, union-backed corporations managed by independent boards. He was still a powerful man, but he was no longer a shadow king.

He was a husband. A father.

"He is getting very fast," Matteo murmured, watching Leo toss a red ball for the puppy.

"He gets that from you," Cameron smiled, turning in his arms to face him, her hands resting on the lapels of his white linen shirt. "Always running toward what he wants."

"I don't need to run anymore," Matteo said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a deep, infinite devotion. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box, sliding a stunning, emerald-cut diamond ring onto her finger. "I have everything I need right here."

"Daddy! Cameron! Look!"

Leo came running up the wooden steps of the deck, his face glowing with triumph as he held up a small, smooth seashell he had found on the sand. "I found a star shell! Just like in the book!"

"It's beautiful, Leo," Cameron said, kneeling down and wrapping her arms around him, pulling him close to her side. "Make a wish."

Leo looked at his father, then at Cameron, his eyes wide, clear, and sparkling with a pure, innocent joy.

"I don't need a wish," the boy said, wrapping his tiny arms around both of their necks. "My family is already here."

As the sun began to set over the calm waters of the bay, casting a warm, golden path across the lawn, Matteo looked at his wife and his son, and he knew that his true empire was not built on fear, stone, or blood.

It was built on the quiet, beautiful love they had found in each other, and the bright, peaceful future they were building together—one beautiful, perfect day at a time.
